This is quite interesting. Last week, we noted that the LG G4 did not support Quick Charge 2.0, even though the Snapdragon 808 did indeed support the technology. LG stated the reason for omitting the technology was the fact that the battery is removable. LG does pack a 1.8A charger with the LG G4 – as well as just about every other device they sell – and it does charge the device quite quickly. So now we have Quick Charge 2.0 + a removable battery which is pretty sweet!
However, today. The LG G4 showed up on Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 documents on their site. We’ve spoken with both LG and Qualcomm and they have stated that yes the LG G4 does now support Quick Charge 2.0. However, they did not give us a reason as to why the sudden change in heart. But it looks like all the hardware components were there. We’re still a few weeks out from the LG G4 actually being available so we still have some time for it to be straightened out. But it appears that LG did hear everyone that was not happy about Quick Charge 2.0 being omitted from the LG G4.
Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 supports a number of devices. In fact, every Snapdragon 800-series powered device supports it. That includes the Moto X (2014), HTC One M8, HTC One M9, Samsung Galaxy S5, and many more. The Samsung Galaxy S6 has its own Quick Charge, it’s not Qualcomm’s standard. Which is mainly due to the fact that the Galaxy S6 is using Samsung’s own Exynos processor. With Quick Charge you can charge up to 80% in no time at all, about 30-45 minutes, that last 20% however, takes quite a bit of time, as it normally does.
The LG G4 should be available in stores around the end of May or early June. We don’t have any specific dates just yet. But we’re definitely excited to get it into users hands and see just how good the camera is on the LG G4. LG seems to have really outdone themselves this year, even though the LG G4 isn’t a huge upgrade from the LG G3. But it looks like Quick Charge 2.0 is just a firmware update away, and we are still on pre-release software. So that’s very possible.
