In the next few weeks, leading up to the global availability of the HTC One M9, we’re going to hear and see us talking about thermal optimizations. As Jeff Gordon from HTC has stated – and so have many others from other companies – all OEMs must set a max for keeping these phones from exploding. This is why you’ll see some phones throttled more than others. This is to keep the temperature down and to keep the phone from getting to warm. We first saw this with the LG G3 last year. Where certain tasks would make the device get pretty warm, and it’d lower the brightness and do a few other things to lower the temperature.
Now we’re seeing it on the HTC One M9. It is one of the effects of having a full metal body, as it does hold in the heat. However, the earlier thermal images we saw were with the HTC One M9 running on early software, software that is not shipping on retail units later this month and early April – depending on where you are. This new image shows that the device is warm, but still cooler than the LG G3. We’re looking at 41.7-degrees Celsius, which comes out to about 107-degrees Fahrenheit. Still pretty warm, but still much less than what we had seen before.
While we still aren’t sure about Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 overheating (we’ve heard from Samsung that it does, we’ve heard from Qualcomm that it doesn’t), it appears that some optimization needs to be done. And we’ll likely see this on other devices as well that come out with the Snapdragon 810. At least HTC and Qualcomm were able to reduce the heat that the Snapdragon 810 puts out on the HTC One M9, although it still might get pretty hot.
The HTC One M9 is slated to go on sale late-March or early-April depending on your market. Here in the US, we’re looking at “around April 10th” which is when the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge will be going on sale globally. Along with the Snapdragon 810, HTC has also added a 5-inch 1080p display, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage on the HTC One M9. They’ve also upped the camera to a 20-megapixel shooter, which we can’t wait to get our hands on and try out.
