Looking for a phone you can take with you into the pool this summer? Sony’s Xperia Z handset is available at T-Mobile for pre-order beginning July 16, with its official launch date slated for July 17. The handset is Sony's attempt to go after the premium space. Although the phone was previously offered as an unlocked, non-LTE handset in the US, T-Mobile will be the first carrier to offer the LTE version.
The Xperia Z features a 1080p display, a 1.5Ghz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of on-board storage, a 2330 mAh battery pack, and Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. You’ll also be able to pop in a microSD card for up to 64GB of additional storage should you ache for that extra space. The Xperia Z will use an Android overlay similar to what's on the company’s Tablet Z device. The phone will include options like a Battery STAMINA Mode, which disables mobile data when the screen is off, and Superior auto mode, which automatically selects the best photography settings for any given picture.
Earlier this year, we got our hands on the Xperia Z at Sony’s booth during CES, but not much had been heard about the phone since its launch a month later. The smartphone launching at T-Mobile is essentially the same product with the same components, though it will feature a few extra applications provided by the carrier.
