Geekgasm alert now as something a bit Marvellous appears on Android making Monday just that bit more bearable. Following on from its attempted dominance of the cinema superhero stakes, Marvel has launched its latest foray into the appmosphere in the shape of Marvel AR.
Yes, that’s Marvel Augmented Reality and it’s the Fantastic Four fanboy’s instant access to the wider Marvel universe. Powered by Aurasma’s augmented reality technology, simply open the app and point it at any product (comic) baring the Marvel AR logo and – Shazam! – you’ll be whisked off to a world of exclusive content, including 3D videos, comic recaps, character biographies, commentaries, artwork and scripts – not unlike the extras you get on a DVD or Blu-ray disc.
In practice holding your phone over a comic until something happens can get pretty tired pretty quickly if you’re not actually 100% nerd, but I suppose that discovering the content is all part of the experience, and this is really aimed at a younger market and not a middle-aged man with patience issues.
THE BOTTOM LINE
The first comic to feature the QR codes for exclusive content (Avengers vs. X-Men #1 Infinite) is due to hit the shelves soon and, as such, my limited review was run using just the cover screenshot featured amongst the images here, but given the instant success I had with that it’s fair to say – by Odin’s beard! – that Marvel fanatics are in for a real augmented treat. Appvengers Assemble!
