You may think you know nothing of Marvel Comics but we’d surprised if this was actually the case. Spider-Man, the X-Men, The Avengers and The Fantastic Four all stem from this famous publisher and now you can delve into their vast universe through your Android tablet. The comics themselves vary drastically in price and Marvel’s digital subscribers won’t be able to access their online collections but otherwise this is an extremely well executed app.
In case you hadn’t already noticed, the Life Of Android team are a pretty geeky bunch. It probably won’t surprise you to know that a fair few comic books line our bookshelves at home either. When the Marvel Comics app arrived on Android this week, we were almost as excitable as Peter Parker after he’d first figured out how to web sling.
In practice, Marvel Comics, or MC as no one should ever call it, is essentially the Comixology app with a fresh skin thrown over it. This is mostly a good thing. Comixology is a fine app and worked well when DC Comics followed exactly the same course with their standalone Android offering.
Given this is a specific Marvel Comics app rather than the Comixology app with a Marvel Comics section, you’d perhaps expect some exclusive features but alas no. Even digital subscribers to Marvel’s online catalogue won’t be able to read their purchases through the app which is a disappointment to say the least.
On the plus side, those who are looking to delve in to the world of comics but aren’t really sure what’s worth reading are well served by a great selection of free titles to download including the first ever edition of Daredevil and several issues of Spider-Man. Each comic, old or new, is rendered to a superb quality where every page is as bright and vibrant as if you’d just picked it up off the newsstand. Navigating through the app is effortless too, you can quickly flick through each comic by swiping across your touchscreen or pinch to zoom in for a more appreciative glimpse of the artwork involved.
Unfortunately, the comics themselves range greatly in price. While you can expect to pay as much as $15 for a brand new issue, older titles clock in as low as $0.99 meaning you can scoop up anything you might have missed the first time around for almost no money at all.
All in all, Marvel Comics is has a lot to offer for diehards and newbies alike and bar the digital subscriber issue, we struggle to find fault with it. Credit to Comixology and Marvel for delivering the goods on what is bound to be highly popular Android Market download.
The Bottom Line
A great selection of fantastically detailed comics available for your Android smartphone or tablet.
