Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it a wholly inappropriate Superman reference in a story about the launch of the Marvel Comics app? Well… yes.
After our top five comic book apps list was sadly missing a proper entry from the Spider-Man and Iron Man creators, Marvel clearly decided to get their act together and make an Android offering to compete with the excellent DC Comics app.
Accordingly, the Marvel Comics app was made available for free download on Tuesday and is compatible with both smartphones and tablets running Android 2.1 or upwards.
“We couldn’t be happier for our fans on Android devices to experience the Marvel Comics app,” comments Peter Phillips, Senior Vice President & General Manager, Marvel Digital Media Group. “This is a big step in our plans to both bring Marvel Digital Comics to a larger audience than ever before and create new fans of our great medium, which can only help drive more fans into comic shops nationwide to read about the Avengers, Spider-Man, X-Men and all of our great characters.”
Users download their comics using a Marvel.Com account, meaning their purchases are available to read online or via an iOS device should they suddenly decided to turn to the dark side.
Additionally, Marvel Comics are now available to acquire through the comiXology app which covers a whole raft of other publishers including DC Comics, Image, IDW and Archie.
The Marvel Comics app is now available for free download from the Android Market.
