There are numerous ways to merge things together, and that number of ways seems to have increased since the introduction of Threes. Merged! is a new matching game that lets you match dice, and work your way up from ones to sixes. Each match of three combines together into the next higher number, and if you match three sixes, you unlock a Merged tile that you can combine to clear part of the board. Merged! takes elements of Threes, Domino Drop, and a few others to merge into a new puzzle experience.
Merged gives you two dice that look like dominoes, and you tap on a piece to rotate it to fit on the board where you like. As the board fills up, you need to be careful what paths you leave open to potentially make a match to clear more space. The main idea is easy to figure out, but there’s a lot of strategy in placing tiles because the resulting match combines to where the last piece of the match was placed. You can set up combination matches by placing the last tile of a match in the right place to lead to the next match. For example, if you place the third five next to two sixes, the fives will combine to create a six, which will combine with the other two sixes. The game board is relatively small, so you don’t have the most room to maneuver making each tile placement that much more important.
Merged is an endless high score challenge, so there’s inherent repetition in the set-up. With that said, there’s also intrinsic replay as you learn more about how the matches form together, and try to better your score. There’s a clean design allowing you to essentially get lost focusing on the puzzle challenge. The style of Merged is definitely familiar, but that doesn’t take away from the quality puzzle experience it creates. There’s a nice payoff of matching tiles from one up to the Merged tiles for an explosion to clear out space to try all over again.
Merged! (Free, Universal) delivers an intriguing puzzle experience that is worth picking up.
