There are certain games that require so much concentration, so much mental capacity and so much parallel thought puzzle solving that, whilst levels can take countless hours and equally countless attempts to complete, you know your brain is getting exactly the kind of workout it needs. This is not one of those games, this is pure, unadulterated, flabby brain fun!
It’s the future and, as predicted by all those misery mongering movies, interstellar war (war between Stella drinkers) and alien invasion has left the planet a veritable hive of Terminator-type human-haters and, as ever, it’s down to you to charge down the on-coming ET threat, armed only with boundless energy and an absolute arsenal of death dealing, off-worlder obliterating shooters.
Taking a fairly standard platform approach to proceedings, the premise is simple: run, jump, duck and shoot your way across each level as quickly and as accurately as you can. But complicating things is an array of mechanised and heavily weaponised far-flung foreigners constantly coming right at you, some of which look like Terminator T-800s, some like Robocop’s ED-209s, but all of which are remorseless in their desire to make you dead.
With weapon upgrades and the occasional tank available to grab as you go along, not to mention a generous eight lives on the medium difficulty setting, Metal Gun – Blood War is little more than a big, dumb, 80s arcade style shoot ’em up. But who says that’s a bad thing?
THE BOTTOM LINE
An app that lacks originality, perhaps, but Metal Gun – Blood War makes up for that with some good old fashioned, button-bashing gaming, an added pinch of movie plagiarism, and play without pay. On the downside, with levels varying little and bosses tending towards the predictable, the overwhelming sense of repetition can be as remorseless as the alien army you face.
