A few months back there were rumors about the future of Microsoft’s Xbox division with some investors and analysts even suggesting that the company should spin off its gaming division. That was thought to be a possibility had former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop taken over from Steve Ballmer as the CEO of Microsoft. Instead the top job went to Satya Nadella who confirmed back in May that he didn’t have any plans of selling Microsoft’s Xbox business, even though co-founder Bill Gates said he’d completely support Nadella in such a decision.
At a conference a few weeks back Nadella was once again asked if he has plans to spin off the Xbox division and he said that there were no such plans. Under his leadership the gaming division was reorganized and was given under the control of Phil Spencer.
As Microsoft enters its 2015 financial year CEO Satya Nadella has reiterated his commitment to the Xbox business in a company-wide email posted on Microsoft’s website. If this doesn’t put an end to speculation about the future of Xbox, I don’t know what will.
“Microsoft will continue to vigorously innovate and delight gamers with Xbox,” Nadella writes, adding that the company will continue to innovate and grow its fan base with Xbox “while also creating additive business value for Microsoft.”
