We loved the original Moto G. But when the second generation Moto G came out with some key improvements to the speakers and camera, it didn't quite have the wow factor of the original. With the Moto G (2015) (or Moto G 3rd gen.) rumored for an early release, we've tried to break down everything we know so far about Motorola's upcoming device. We now have multiple pics too, pretty much confirming the appearance of the new Moto G.
After last week's leaked Moto G (3rd generation) pics, we now have our first look at the Moto G (2015) in press render form. The renders were leaked to Techno Buffalo and purport to be of the device codenamed Osprey (model XT1540).
The device closely matches the Moto G (2015) pics leaked (below) already, so it's looking increasingly sure this is the 3rd generation Moto G. There's not much new to see other than a dual-LED flash and the Moto G (2015) features a new text messaging app icon.
Previous coverage: A Google+ user posted a video (seen below) which offered a good look at the device (when it’s not in shadow) but sadly it is in Spanish and it’s mainly looking at the AnTuTu benchmarks. At the very least it gives us a good look at the Moto G (2015) specs.
Other leaked images had appeared previously too, as you can see in the image below. The device has a textured battery cover, which we assume will be removable and switchable with a variety of colored covers through the Moto Maker program. It's a nice way to add some “flare" to an otherwise plain-looking device.
Moto G (2015) specs
The device looks like it will launch with Android 5.1.1, indicating a release soon (we’re expecting it in July.) If the Moto G (3rd generation) specs are real, it will house a 5-inch HD display, 1 GB of RAM, and 8 GB internal storage and microSD card support — the same as last year's Moto G.
Where is might differ is in the camera technology: the new Moto G could have a 13 MP main camera and 5 MP front-facing camera. We're also expecting LTE support. Comparatively, the Moto G (2014) had an 8 MP rear camera, 2 MP front camera. An LTE version was later released — see our Moto G 4G LTE review for more on that.
Moto G (2015) release date
Originally, we were expecting the Moto G third generation to appear alongside the Moto X third generation at IFA 2015 in September. But recent rumors have the Moto G (2015) release date as early as July. The recent increase in leaks and renders also make an imminent release look more likely.
The early release rumors were based on the 10-month cycle between the first and second generations of Moto G (November 2013 – September 2014). However, accelerated launch cycles are like ghost stories: they're always talked about but very rarely materialize.
We have been told by Moto insiders that there may well be a separate launch event prior to IFA to avoid getting drowned out by other product launches like the Galaxy Note 5. So we could see both the Moto G (2015) and Moto X (2015) launched a few weeks before IFA, sometime in August.
Motorola CEO Rick Osterloh recently had the following to say about the Moto X (2015) and there's no reason not think he's also talking about the Moto G (2015). Note that his comment also allows for a slightly earlier release than IFA 2015.
.@northead we try to stay on a roughly annual cycle for all of our products including Moto X. #AskRickO
So that’s where we’re at. The Moto G (2015) doesn’t look like a radical redesign or a major improvement in the specs department, so we’re really just hoping for some more aggressive pricing from Motorola to really push sales.
