They may not be for everyone but for those of us who have suffered the horror of dropping our smartphone before picking it up to reveal a cracked screen, heavy-duty phones can be something of a godsend. It's a market Motorola appears to be targeting with the Motorola Moto X Force and we can now provide you with all the information and rumors regarding the phone's price, release and technical specifications.
The idea of a smartphone that's robust enough to be constantly used outdoors yet still manages to look at least vaguely stylish has always seemed something of a pipedream but Motorola have, at last, given it a real shot.
And it looks like it might just have paid off. The Moto X Force seems to have all the right ingredients, combining high end screen resolution and hardware with a supposedly 'shatterproof' build. The new device appears certain to have a 5.7 inch screen with the distinctive Motorola design that has proved a little divisive but it is also rumored to have a much larger battery and a mid-range price.
Moto X Force: Price and release date
Price: According to leaked information from @upleaks the Moto X Force will be priced at about $600, which would compare favorably to most flagship phones. However, it's worth noting that the recently released Moto X Style retails at about $550 and the Moto X Play, which apparently served as the design template for the Force, can be picked up for as little as $400. The higher price can largely be explained by the difference in design quality and build, as you'll see below.
Availability: There's no definitive information on a release date yet but many consider that the Moto X Force could hit the shops in December. The other Moto flagships have widely been available since mid-August.
Moto X Force: Specs
Whispers on the internet suggest the new model will be a cross between Motorola's X and X Style Play. The latter was a much weaker model but had a significantly larger battery, which is the hope for the X Force.
The X Force is likely to blend technical specifications of the Style and the Play - 5.4-inch qHD display (1440 x 2560 pixels), 3 GB RAM, 32 to 64 GB of data storage, 3,760 mAh battery capacity, a 21-MP rear camera and a 5 MP front camera. The processor will be the infamous Snapdragon 810 but hopefully without the overheating problems that have become synonymous with it. It is also expected the X Force will have water resistance of up to 30 minutes at a depth of 1 metre.
Moto X Force: Design
As mentioned earlier, the X Force is expected to be priced higher than Motorola's other 2015 releases, with the material changes that make it robust accounting for much of the increase. The plastic housing of other models is likely to be superseded by a much more resilient metal frame around the phone. Meanwhile, the leaked pictures suggest the back of the phone will look fairly similar to the Moto X Play - although the frame looks both thicker and interchangable, again making it a tougher proposition.
Perhaps the most interesting rumor though is that of the 'shatterproof' glass. Unfortunately, no-one has been able to explain exactly what this means but if Motorola can indeed make an unbreakable screen, it would be a very welcome step indeed. However, until we've seen (and dropped) it first-hand, you'll excuse us for maintaining an air of skepticism around the claim. But here's hoping...
Could this be a big breakthrough? Do you think smartphones need to be tougher?
