This week’s entry in the PlayStation Plus’ Instant Game Collection is a fan-favorite around these parts, especially for Gaming Editor Joey Davidson. Mutant Mudds was originally an indie hit on the Nintendo 3DS from developer Renegade Kidd, but this new Deluxe version takes it into HD with more content than ever before.
Mutant Mudds Deluxe is a retro platformer with a heavy emphasis on its 8-bit presentation. Before you think that just about every game is like that these days, and trust me, there are a lot out there, Mutant Mudds is special for just the extent it takes its inspiration. The incredibly retro pixel art, the chiptunes, the simple yet solid gameplay: there is a lot to a “charm” and “feel” to a game that sometimes gameplay alone can’t capture. That is Mutant Mudds‘ greatest strength.
However, that’s not to say it isn’t fun either. Mutant Mudds made great use of the Nintendo 3DS’ 3D capabilities with our hero being able to leap in and out of the different layers of the stage design. He can walk in the background, the normal plane of gameplay, or even right in your face in the foreground. Shooting is simplistic, but jumping and collecting everything this game has to offer is the real challenge.
Granted, the PS Vita doesn’t have the 3D effects of the Nintendo 3DS, so I’m excited to see how Renegade Kidd has handled what seemed like a integral part of the game. I’ve never played any version beyond the original. Thanks to the powers of cross buy, this version will also be playable on the PlayStation 3. Sweet!
I’ll definitely be picking this one up once the PlayStation Store updates.
