Netflix, the popular TV and movie streaming service, has finally crossed the Atlantic to arrive in the UK and Ireland.
The US-based service for Android and iOS devices, holds 20 million online subscribers across 47 countries but will face a tough battle for customers from Lovefilm which achieved a total of two million subscribers over the Christmas period.
Netflix are aiming to capture the imagination of British-based consumers with a bounty of home produced content such as Top Gear, The Only Way Is Essex, and Torchwood. All these programmes and numerous movies, including Pulp Fiction and Kick-Ass, will be available to view through various Android and iOS equipped smartphones and tablets, as well as internet connected televisions.
The streaming services’ UK launch comes at a time of turmoil for the company however, with 800,000 customers having unsubscribed during the third quarter of last year following a series of controversial price rises. As a result, chief executive Reed Hastings has been hesitant to target specific UK goals for Netflix.
“We think about it as trying to get to millions of members over the next few years. We very much think of it as a long-term investment,” he commented to the BBC.
