The rumors of a new 10.5″ iPad Pro have been with us for over six months now, but as we get closer to a probable release at WWDC, the device is finally coming into clearer focus thanks to case leaks and the device mockups that are now leaking from reputable sources. Unfortunately, according to well-known leaker Shai Mizrachi concept artist Benjamin Geskin, the device matches early reports to a degree, but doesn’t go as far as the long-rumored bezel-less design we all think the iPhone 8 will have.
According to Mr Geskin’s device mockup and renders, the new iPad Pro will have slimmer bezels than the current models, but they are still present on all four sides.
However, the more disappointing revelation (at least to me) is that the new device will still have a Home button, rather than the embedded TouchID design many hoped for. It is worth noting that reports are that the Home button will have the new solid-state design from the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, with Taptic feedback.
The 10.5″ iPad Pro looks like it may share the vertical camera orientation of the coming iPhone 8, but that is where the similarities seem to end. Another deviation from earlier rumors is that the 10.5″ iPad Pro will not have the same chassis as the 9.7″ model. Rather, it is about the same width, but according to case leaks, will be taller than the existing model.
While these are still rumors, if the 10.5″ iPad Pro is going to be announced at WWDC and released soon after, it would have to be well into the production process by now. According to earlier rumors, it actually did go into production several weeks ago. At this stage of the game, the leaks tend to have a lot more substance as the abandoned prototypes fall away and more people put their eyes on actual production models, mockups, and parts. As such, I think there is likely a lot of validity to what we are seeing now.
Other items worth noting from what was said or not said in various reports today:
According to Mr Geskin, there won’t be an iPad Mini released. This lines up with rumors last week that the Mini is not long for this world.
It looks like the coming updates 12.9″ iPad will share design cues with the 10.5″ model. It should have the same camera arrangement and solid-state Home button.
There is no mention of a new 9.7″ model, as many rumors predicted in previous months. It will be interesting to see what Apple does with the existing model if an upgraded model isn’t released.
