Apple is ready to go big, even bigger than the iPhone 6 Plus/iPhone 6s Plus, according to a new rumor. And before we even dive into this rumor, let’s just all take a healthy serving of salt. Not a grain, not even a spoonful, but a big ol’ gulp of salt.
OK, let’s move on.
Rumor has it Apple is going to launch an iPhone with a 5.8-inch OLED display sometime in 2017 or 2018. The rumor is sourced from DigiTimes and cited by The Motley Fool, though DigiTimes, which itself isn’t always on the mark with rumors, still hasn’t run the story. So there you go. But, there are a few reasons this adds up.
Motley Fool thinks it might end up launching as a “second-generation iPhone Pro,” the first-generation of which is expected sometime this year when Apple introduces the iPhone 7. Rumor has it the phone will pack extra and presumably more expensive camera equipment, including a dual-lens configuration.
Anything can change between now and two years from now. Apple will very likely adopt OLED at some point, simply because it offers advantages for color reproduction and battery life. Whether or not Apple actually jumps up to a 5.8-inch display is anyone’s guess.
