Back in the day before he started Cosmic Ordering from the Freeman’s blouse catalogue, TV tidy beard, Noel Edmunds, would test addicts of the telly on a TV show rather unimaginatively named (given the subject and contestants) Telly Addicts. Now wallowing in banker-baiting banality over on Channel 4, Noel may be more interested in box opening than box watching these days, but the true telly addict is still out there, as this new TiVo Android app proves…
Not everyone who likes TV is comfortable giving their money to Rupert Murdoch, believing him to be what your gran would have called ‘a bad man’, so these people turn instead to an alternative set-top box service supplier, such as Virgin (other suppliers are also, probably, available) who provide a rather nifty TiVo DVR. But whilst the TiVo matches the Sky box on features and performance, this lovely little app addition for Android smartphones and tablets has upped the game.
Available for download from Google Play now, the free app lets users search, browse, explore, and share comments without interrupting what is currently playing on the DVRs from the comfort of their Android devices, and comes packed with features, including a channel guide allowing users to schedule a recording up to 14 days in advance (Sky only allows for seven), a replica remote, a search function to find specific shows or movies, an information screen to explore cast and crew information, and the ability to start playing a live show.
Adding social media to the mix too, the TiVo app also hooks up with the usual suspects of Twitter and Facebook to let those with short attention spans comment on the movies and TV shows they’re supposed to be watching, without having to pause the programme.
As a non-TiVo owner, testing the app out might be a tad tricky, but if any of you want to do the honours and let us know what you make of it all, report back here!
