AVAST Software was founded in 1991 and now has offices around the world. They produce security freeware and shareware programs under the Avast brand for personal and commercial use on PCs, Macs and Android devices with a user interface available in 45 languages. As of 2013, more than 200 million devices worldwide have used Avast and as of January 2014, Avast had almost 16-percent of the worldwide security market share. Avast is currently protecting over 25 million Android devices and has won numerous awards.
They have just come up with a new version of their free software with a redesigned virus scanner that is now up to 50-percent faster. They have also improved support for Intel-based devices and lastly, they included a referral program. You can earn up to three months of Avast Mobile Premium for free. As Android’s popularity continues to grow worldwide, the threat of Android hackers also grows – thieves go after the large target numbers. It is not that the Android OS is less protected than Apple’s iOS, but the wide spread usage of Android is more attractive to the hackers – in other words, the more the merrier. As long as you download apps from trusted places, like the Google Play Store, than your mobile device is probably not under any direct threats or attacks. But if you side-load applications, then your chances are much greater that your device could be harboring some sort of malware.
While Avast Mobile Security does offer an in-app purchase for a Premium version – $1.99 a month or $14.99 per year (a 37-percent savings) – the main program that is free, really handles the antivirus part of the program. The free version will protect you against unwanted phishing, malware, spyware and malicious viruses such as Trojans, as well as secures your device against loss or theft. You get security tools like a virus scanner, virus removal, network meter, app manager, app lock and it will even provide a firewall on rooted phones. It will also protect your device against general infections, app vulnerabilities, Wi-Fi-based threats to your OS as well as scan your memory card. You can even locate lost phones/tablets through their web-based phone locator feature. It also offers remote lock feature and you can do a memory wipe to keep you data safe.
According to AVAST, the Premium features will add the following options: App Locking: Locks an unlimited number of apps – Ad Detector: Detects ads and provides full details of their tracking systems – Password Check: Automatically locks after 3 failed attempts to unlock – Geo-Fencing: Phone performs specified actions (e.g. lock, activate siren, send location) when outside the set perimeter (e.g. you go to a cafe and enable it with a 500m perimeter, so if somebody steals your phone and takes it away, it triggers your specified actions) – Remote SMS: Remotely send text messages from the phone – Remote Data Recovery: Remotely retrieve data from the phone – Remote Identification: Take picture of the thief when he/she tries to unlock it (using front or back camera, with face recognition). Record audio, with voice recognition – Backup Features: Allows backup of video, audio, and apps (including settings and data for rooted phones, e.g. game progress).
