Has Google done it again? A smartphone has appeared on an official Google website which looks like it could be the rumored Nexus 5 (2015). But we have to ask ourselves - is this the Nexus 5, or possibly a larger Nexus 6 (2015)? Actually no, it's neither.
Cast your minds back: Remember when the first Nexus 5 was no longer a rumor, when Google revealed the much-hyped device during one of its promotional videos? At the time we could only speculate, but with the benefit of hindsight, we saw Google reveal its coming Nexus device with the video.
One AndroidPIT reader, Sven, tipped us off to the mystery smartphone on this official Android page. So once again, a new Android device has appeared before an expected Nexus launch, but which we can't identify. Has Google done it to us again?
Our newsroom is abuzz with answering the question, but so far we've been unable to come up with an existing smartphone which fits the bill. It comes close in design to the Nexus 7, but we believe it's too small.
Unfortunately, it is impossible to measure the phone's size in any reliable way. In any case, the device seems very wide, meaning we'd have to rule out a 5-inch model. We have reached out to Google for comment on this story and are awaiting a response. It's still far too early for a leak of this nature - we aren't expecting the next generation Nexus to arrive before October.
But you can help us. Can you identify the matte, extremely slim smartphone in this picture? Is it simply a bit of Google marketing to bait speculation? If we assume that there will be a Nexus 5 (2015), which is built by LG and measuring around 5.2 inches - with all the strengths of its predecessor - would this image fit the coming Nexus like a glove?
