This whole Huawei Nexus business looks to be firming up nicely, from specs and rumors to the usual pre-launch leaky sieve kicking into overdrive. We still have absolutely no idea what it will be called, but we're going with Nexus 6 (2015) simply because that's about the size it'll be and, well, it's coming out this year. Let's take a look at what we know about the Nexus 6 (2015) release date, price, specs and rumors.
All signs point to Huawei. Ever since the beginning of the year there have only been two serious contenders for the 2015 Nexus: LG and Huawei. We've already confirmed that LG will build the Nexus 5 (2015) and are almost certain Huawei is behind the second Nexus device in 2015.
We haven't been able to get a source to confirm as much but the conversations we've had certainly look promising. For example, when a UK-based Huawei employee reportedly confirmed that Huawei would build a Nexus and we asked Huawei about it, we were assured that the hunt would begin for the loose-lipped offender. If there was no truth to what was said, why go after the guy?
Nexus 6 (2015) release date
As far as we can tell, the Nexus 6 (2015) will arrive alongside the Nexus 5 (2015). Right now there are two options for a Nexus 6 (2015) release date: the traditional Nexus timeslot around the end of October/beginning of November or the expected date of arrival for the final version of Android M: August.
The ''Android M in August'' theory comes from an Android M developer preview update schedule shown at Google I/O 2015. The schedule showed two planned updates for the developer preview, one in June and one in July, before the final release.
Everyone was quick to assume that meant the final version of Android M – and thus the new Nexus – was due in August, but we can't say that for sure. Meanwhile, serial leaker Evan Blass has tweeted that the Huawei Nexus will ship in Q4, 2015, putting us right back at an October/November launch.
Huawei Nexus sounds impressive so far: 5.7" QHD w/ metal body, SD820 SoC, fingerprint reader. Ships Q4.
The Nexus 6 (2015) price is anybody's guess. We've heard that Google wants the smaller LG-built Nexus to be cheaper but that doesn't tell us anything about the price of the larger Huawei Nexus.
Based on the specs we've been consistently hearing though, it seems like we'll definitely have a larger, more expensive device with better specs and a smaller, cheaper, less powerful device on our hands.
Nexus 6 (2015) specs
The Huawei Nexus is expected to have a 5.7-inch QHD screen with a metal body. According to Evan Blass, it will ship with the Snapdragon 820 CPU and a fingerprint reader. Considering Android M introduces native fingerprint recognition to stock Android and that Huawei already has a great fingerprint scanner on the Ascend Mate 7, this was pretty much a given.
Previous Nexus 6 (2015) specs leaked by Android Police (of a Huawei device codenamed Angler) pointed towards a 3,500 mAh battery and a Snapdragon 810. Considering the negative press that chip has been receiving around thermal throttling and overheating this year, we're not surprised to see the old switcheroo take place. Another CPU option to keep in mind is Huawei's Kirin 950.
Nexus 6 (2015) features
Right now we don't know much about Nexus 6 (2015) features other than the fingerprint scanner and metal frame. We're not expecting waterproofing or anything too flashy though. There are a number of Android M features that provide some interesting clues, but we'll leave further speculation up to you until we have some more to go on.
That's about it for now, but stay tuned for our Nexus 6 (2015) review as soon as we get our hands on one.
