Former Team Ninja boss Tomonobu Itagaki is best known for his fast paced ninja action and the fact that he never ever takes off his sunglasses when he is in public. Ever since his high profile departure from Tecmo in 2008, his new studio, Valhalla Game Studios, has remained relatively silent on Devil’s Third, but an unexpected appearance at E3 now has the studio’s first game locked in as a Wii U exclusive.
Devil’s Third will be bringing a much needed dose of over the top third-person action to Nintendo’s console. We’re not sure if the game will be able to attract the Call of Duty crowd to the Wii U, but those who already own one should definitely check out this brash and “in your face” experience.
Nintendo “really understood my vision,” Itagaki said during the reveal. Strange because this is the last kind of game I would expect Nintendo to be supporting, even with Bayonetta 2 on the way.
Devil’s Third switches between a third-person shooter, with every standard included all the way down to the ironsights shooting, and the normal hack ‘n slash you’d expect from a Ninja Gaiden game. Limb dismemberment, flashy costumes, and even the character’s mouth animation. This game is so Japanese in its design, aesthetic, and approach in absolutely every way.
I won’t say its gameplay looks “good” by today’s polished standards, but fans of unrefined, old-school Japanese action games and all of the over-the-top characterizations they bring to the table are definitely going to get a kick out of Devil’s Third. It will be released as a Wii U exclusive, but Nintendo has not yet announced a release date.
