Now I am not one to compare apps one to another especially when it comes down to 3rd party clients because I believe each one has its own merits, but I must say that I am extremely impressed with the official version released recently, and the guys over at 4squick will have to be on the lookout, cause there’s a new kid on the block and he means business.
Written in qml and with an overhauled UI, compared to the Symbian version, the app offers all the basic features available in 4sq. The app is pretty fast but not as fast as 4squick Navigating between menus is simple and straight forward. Upon starting the app, you are required to add your 4sq credentials (only on the first time), log in and the you will be directed to the landing page (places) – one thing that I did notice is that it takes a while before it actually locks onto the GPS signal, but maybe I’m just a little spoilt by 4squick’s speed.
The blue bar on the top will give you access to a pop up menu where you can navigate to other pages in the app like – friends, shout, explore, my profile and notifications tray. Now I’m not going to bore you with all the details of each feature cause I am sure you all know them already, but would like to highlight one that I have not seen either on the Symbian version or 3rd party clients, and that is the one that appears above the little map on the ‘places’ page. As you know and have probably heard in the press, Foursquare over the last few months have been expanding their Foursquare Specials platform to more partners, basically what this feature does, is help you discover the near-by deals that are right for you – that means that if one of the 4sq partners is offering a special etc near by, it will appear in orange above the map and when you check-in to the venue you will be able to receive what ever special the venue is offering, like a discount, give away etc. (You can see some examples in the screen shots below)
You can also add new venues, pictures (only from your gallery at the moment), tips etc. Map integration with Nokia Maps is seamless and one little treat that really made me smile was when you check in to a venue and are or just became a mayor – an animated golden crown drops down the screen to land on your profile picture, pretty cool. Any way, here are a few screen shots of the app on the N950.
