HTC’s One M9 wasn’t exactly the hit the company was hoping for. The phone-maker already promised a brand new handset later this year, but it looks like HTC may also release a refreshed version of the M9 with one big difference.
According to ePrice, the new and improved HTC One M9could swap out Qualcomm’s overheating Snapdragon 810 for a MediaTek chip. It’s unclear exactly which processor the company will use, though there are plenty of choices available. MediaTek even offers a deca-core option with the Helio X20. HTC could also opt for a cheaper processor in an effort to bring the One M9’s price down overall.
Beyond the processor, we assume this alleged One M9 refresh will feature the same hardware as the flagship phone. That includes a 5-inch 1080p display, a 2840mAh battery, a 20-megapixel rear camera, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. If HTC is wise, it should also replace that camera with a more high-end sensor, since that was one of the biggest issues reviewers had with the One M9.
We’re not totally sure what to make of this rumor. It doesn’t really add up, since HTC has already released variants of the M9 with MediaTek processors and is trying to cut back costs, not increase them with another new phone. That doesn’t mean it’s out of the question entirely. HTC currently has its back against the wall, and the company may be willing to try anything to improve its situation.
