It’s time to get back to your barbaric roots in a kill, or be killed world in the new iOS game One Spear Savage. It’s an arcade arena style game where you control a single savage who only has one spear at his disposal. There are various other savages from enemy tribes, and it’s simply a fight for survival with an endless high score set-up. You toss the spear to take down enemies, but you have to go run down that spear to use it again. That mechanic adds a whole new challenge to contend with which makes the game feel fresh, and strategic.
One Spear Savage can be played in multiple ways thanks to three different game modes, and six different environments. You can play classic death match survival, capture the flag, or death race where you go to consecutive relay points. There are three main map types with two difficulties each, and you get to play in the jungle with explosive barrels, in a snow storm where wind impacts a spear toss, and in the volcano with flying lava. There are 18 different combinations of ways to play, and it allows for variety to keep you intrigued, and playing the core arcade arena set-up. There are new objectives, and leaderboards for each map, and game mode to add to the replay factor.
All of the action is presented through a 3D design with rudimentary on screen objects that offer a great setting for the intense action that is included. Most of the time you have to face multiple enemies and you need to focus on targeting one, while another could spear you from behind. You also need to consider where your spear will land after you toss it, and then you need to try to weave through the environment to retrieve your spear. All of it is controlled simply enough as you tap to move, and then drag your finger to aim, and release to launch your spear. It’s simply enjoyable to blast through waves of savages under different settings with the risk presented with each toss of your spear. It’s so much better than just pressing a fire button to shoot a gun as there’s some actually strategy to your arena survival. The game is a bit shallow in the long run, and there’s the odd inclusion where you can die by walking over a spear laying on the ground.
