OnePlus 3 units running the latest beta version of HydrogenOS are now capable of supporting the aptX codec which may improve the listening experience using Bluetooth headsets. For those unfamiliar with HydrogenOS, this is the operating system OnePlus loads onto the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T units sold in China, as opposed to OxygenOS which is shipped with the international variant of OnePlus 3. While the support for aptX and aptX HD codec is currently limited to the beta version of HydrogenOS, the OnePlus 3 owners in China should expect the support for the audio codec to trickle down to the stable builds of Hydrogen OS soon. Nonetheless, interested owners of the OnePlus 3 currently running HydrogenOS may check out the latest beta of the operating system, HydrogenOS beta 12, to check the improvements the new codecs may bring to the owner’s listening experience.
The aforementioned Bluetooth codecs, aptX and aptX HD, are both currently owned by Qualcomm, promise better listening experience over Bluetooth headphones. Usually, the quality of music or other audio material streamed via Bluetooth is affected by the limits of the wireless technology, with Bluetooth’s data pipeline restricting the size of the audio files that can be streamed via Bluetooth. The use of aptX codecs delivers a workaround to this limitation by compressing the large audio files even further in a way that the audio quality is not severely compromised, making it fit into the limited data pipeline. The use of the aptX codec, Qualcomm claims, allows for an improved listening experience through the delivery of a CD-like audio quality via Bluetooth.
OnePlus 3’s support of aptX puts it on par with the flagship competition, as high-end smartphones now include support for the codec. Meanwhile, Android O is expected to support aptX Bluetooth codec, though we probably have to wait until later this year before Google releases the final version of Android O. At this point, the HydrogenOS beta, which is compatible with international versions of OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T, only supports aptX codecs for OnePlus 3, and we still don’t know when will the support land for the OnePlus 3T, stay tuned for that.
