Last month, hot on the heels of the release of the OnePlus 2 , CEO and co-founder of One Plus Car Pei confirmed the manufacturer was already starting to develop a new smartphone. Talk about living up to their "Never Settle" motto...some are suggesting that the new arrival could be the OnePlus 3, while others think it could be something that surprises everyone. The good thing is we won't have to wait long to find out, with the new device expected to arrive before the end of the year.
While, for now, we're working on the assumption that the new model will be the OnePlus 3, there have been claims made on Reddit that it won't be a OnePlus 3 or even a OnePlus 2s. The prevailing mood there seems to be that a mid-range OnePlus 2 or perhaps a OnePlus 2 mini will be announced.
Despite those rumors, a new generation phone can't be ruled out entirely. Chinese website My Drivers have intercepted an email from OnePlus employee Pete Lau in which he talks openly about the ongoing research and development process for an entirely new model.
Here at AndroidPIT, we'd really love to see something more akin to the first generation of OnePlus smartphones - a real giant killer that offered great value for money. The second generation was not as universally loved, perhaps because of the high expectations developed by its predecessor. Most of all though, it's crucial that the third generation keeps the price as low as possible - after all, that's the key selling point of OnePlus.
One Plus 3 Design : What we'd like to see
This is one area where we hope to see real improvement, with previous generations lacking anything that made them stand out from a design perspective. Hopefully we'll be able to at least keep that handy button that allows you to switch between notifications and the black 'sandstone' cover that makes the device so robust.
In terms of size, we're not expecting an increase. This is mainly due to the fact that the OnePlus 2 is just about on the right side of the practical/bulky divide and adding even a few millimetres would tip it over the edge.
One Plus 3: Specs...what we'd like to see
Although nothing is confirmed, we're hopeful that the new device will use Qualcomm's best chip - the Snapdragon 820. Previous models in the series used the cursed Snapdragon 810 despite its overheating problems but the new generation chip should solve this issue and allow for better performance. Of course, we'd also expect to see the new phone employ a USB type C port, as its predecessor did.
OnePlus 3: Availability and price
Judging from the time frames the manufacturer worked under for the last two editions, many informed commentators would estimate we'll see the new smartphone next summer. However, the leaked e mail from Pete Lau talks only of the development process taking 'more than four months.' As such, it is possible that we could see a new OnePlus flagship by the end of 2015.
