Hype surrounding the OnePlus 5 continues to build as its release nears. Rumors suggest it will be a beast of a phone, and now we have more concrete information about some of its impressive features.
According to OnePlus co-founder and CEO Pete Lau, the OnePlus 5 will be “the thinnest flagship” when it is released later this year. Lau opened up about the OnePlus 5 to Chinese social media website Weibo, talking about the details that went into crafting a thin frame without sacrificing battery and risking over-heating.
Currently, the OnePlus 3T is 7.4mm thick. For comparison, the iPhone 7 is 7.1mm thick and the Galaxy S8 is 8mm thick. The OnePlus 5 will be thinner than all of them.
It’s an interesting direction OnePlus is taking the design. OnePlus is trying to stand out among smartphone juggernauts, and having the thinnest smartphone is a great selling tactic. Unfortunately, it comes with potential sacrifices.
Apple and Samsung have cooled on making phones thinner and instead have actually increased the thickness of their devices in the past couple years. The iPhone 6 was 6.9mm thick and the Galaxy S6 was 7mm thick, yet subsequent generations have gotten thicker in favor of more battery life and better features.
We’ll see if OnePlus can deliver on its promise of performance with the thinnest flagship around when the OnePlus 5 arrives.
