The launch of the OnePlus One is only two weeks away and even at this late stage the company is still fine tuning the device so that it will offer some of the best performance on the market. With its mantra of “Never Settle” the CEO of OnePlus Pete Lau has made a shock announcement. The OnePlus One has changed processors! At the beginning of March OnePlus officially announced that the handset would use the 2.3 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800. But now Peter Lau has announced that a 2.3 GHz Snapdragon 800 is too old school and instead the handset will use a 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801.
It is the fastest SoC currently on the market. The higher CPU clock brings better overall speed.
The GPU in the 801 is faster. It is clocked at 578MHz instead of 450MHz. This will improve gaming performance.
The Snapdragon 801 features the newer eMMC 5.0 standard with a better interface speed. This means that copying, moving, opening, modifying and writing data to the internal storage will be quicker.
The development of the OnePlus One has been interesting to witness. The company was set up by former Oppo VP Peter Lau and the company’s first device could bring back the ‘wow’ factor to the smartphone market. For starters it won’t be running stock Android (with or without a fluffy GUI on top) but rather the device will use the popular CyanogenMod ROM. Secondly, it won’t cost $500 or $600 like the top phones from Samsung or Apple. The company plans to sell the device for as little as $400 in North America and under 350 euros in Europe.
Talking of Cyanogenmod, OnePlus have posted a video showing Steve Kondik unboxing his OnePlus One.
As well as announcing the faster SoC, Peter Lau also took the opportunity to spill the beans about the amount of memory the OnePlus One will pack. After careful consideration the device will have 3GB of memory.
So far, we have also been quiet about the amount of RAM that the OnePlus One will have. I have been working very closely with our engineers here to determine the best way to absolutely maximize performance. After carefully considering each option, today I can tell you that the OnePlus One will come with 3GB of RAM. This way no matter how memory hungry your games and apps may be, you will never have to worry about delay due to a lack of available RAM. Peter Lau
Last month the company also revealed that the device would use a 3,100 mAh non-removable battery which should be able to handle the power requirements of a 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 without any problems!
The OnePlus One is scheduled to be launched on April 23rd. Are you looking forward to the announcement.
