Although OnePlus is best known for their incredibly cheap smartphone, the OnePlus One, they still see themselves as a technology company, not just a phone manufacturer. With that in mind, the company has released a few teaser images about an upcoming device that’s not a smartphone, not a tablet, and not a smartwatch. OnePlus is calling it a “game changer,” though, and you can see where they’re going with that in the three pictures that were released.
The three images say “Start a new game,” “For the fun of it,” and “You’re in control.” Any guesses on how those things may tie into a game changing device? Yep, my money is on OnePlus releasing a game controller.
Mobile gaming is getting bigger and bigger, but it still can’t quite pull in the same audience that Microsoft and Sony have with their dedicated consoles and PC gaming, and I’d bet part of that is because of how awful playing a serious game on a touchscreen is. It’s perfectly acceptable for something slow paced like Candy Crush, but even popular games like Gameloft’s Modern Combat series are still just a nightmare to navigate without dedicated buttons, at least in my personal opinion. A controller with actual sticks and clicking buttons is the only way to capture that audience.
The next question is how OnePlus plans on shaking up the market of game controllers. Current game controllers from the likes of MOGA and other companies are just okay, which is why you see so many threads about people downloading apps off of the Play Store and using crazy workarounds to get their console gaming controllers working on their Android devices. The Bluetooth controllers that are on the market now aren’t comfortable, and syncing them with a phone is hit-or-miss. It’s definitely something that a big company could easily step in, make something great, and gobble up most of the market share that other manufacturers are ignoring.
Either way, the device is set to unveil in April. Any ideas on what OnePlus will release? I’m just hoping whatever it is will work with Nintendo’s mobile games.
