Disney fired director James Gunn from "Guardians of the Galaxy 3" on Friday after old offensive tweets resurfaced.
A petition to rehire him has over 250,000 signatures and is almost at its goal of 300,000 as of Tuesday morning.
The petition states, "If you do this to Gunn you have to do it for all the other directors who have said some crappy joke sometime in their life."
Not everyone is happy about Disney's decision to fire director James Gunn from "Guardians of the Galaxy 3," and they're making their displeasure known with an online petition to rehire him.
The Change.org petition for Disney to reinstate Gunn to direct Marvel's next "Guardians" movie, due in theaters in 2020, has over 250,000 signatures as of Tuesday morning, and it's almost at its goal of 300,000.
"The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James' Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio's values," Disney said in a statement.
The petition urges Disney to "come to their senses" and states "the jokes were sh---- and un-funny but they were still jokes, it wasn't an opinion or a statement, it was just a bad attempt at being funny."
It continues: "If you do this to Gunn you have to do it for all the other directors who have said some crappy joke sometime in their life, which is all of them, cause I doubt there's one human on this planet who hasn't made a sh---- joke once or twice in their life."
Fans and celebrities alike have come to Gunn's defense since his firing, including "Guardians" actors like Dave Bautista, who plays Drax in the movies. Bautista tweeted on Friday that Gunn is "one of the most loving, caring, good natured people I have ever met" and "Im NOT ok with what's happening to him."
Gunn had finished the script for "Guardians 3" and planned to start filming this fall.
