Plasma Sound HD is one of the strangest Android apps we’ve ever had the pleasure of experimenting with. A musical instrument app for your smartphone or tablet, it allows you to construct electronic harmonies by swiping across your touchscreen. Imagine it as a downloadable Tenori-On which costs you nothing and can be carried around in your pocket. Very cool indeed.
Plasma Sound HD has two main modes, the first is purely for experimentation and allows you to create weird wooshing noises which vary depending on which part of the touchscreen you’re tapping with your fingers. Multi-touch is supported so you can technically construct chords out of your actions but this can be fairly difficult.
Like any vintage synth, most aspects of the sounds you’re making can be altered to engineer a greater tremelo or vibrato tone to the off-kilter electronica. Unfortunately, there’s no option to shift instruments as if you’re playing guitar or percussion but we’re not sure how easily this idea could executed anyway.
Even better is the sequencer feature which allows you to construct songs by tapping squares on your smartphone’s screen and then arranging them into a pleasant order. The size of any grid and the tempo of the music can be altered, so in theory you could create the next Top 40 hit using Plasma Sound. You’d have a hard time doing so but anything is possible.
Ultimately, we like Plasma Sound because it has a rare imagination that managed to charm our socks off. There’s nothing else we’ve tested that’s like it and that is a remarkably good thing.
The Bottom Line
A strange but joyous musical instrument app.
