With the new Premier League season just over a week away, we’ve trawled through Google Play to find a suitable app for all the news and results from the 2013/14 campaign.
It’s gobsmacking that the English Premier League doesn’t offer an official app of its own, but there are loads of alternatives available for all the latest in football fixtures, tables, results and transfer rumours. Some of them have even been dressed up to look like an official premier league app, but don’t be fooled – we’ve downloaded enough in our time to realise that they’re rarely worth the energy it takes to hit the buy button.
Premier League News isn’t perfect – far from it – but by plugging into various third-party services it manages to cover most of the key information. News and transfer rumours are aggregated from a number of different of websites and Twitter feeds, so you’re not relying on just one source for content – but a handpicked selection of useful footy journalism. Similarly, the ‘live scores’ tab is pulled directly from Livescore and team-by-team news updates are sourced from Sky Sports News.
All these plug-ins and redirections mean that Premier League News is a little on the slow side. The clunkiness extends to the design too, which is crammed with low-resolution images and very basic, eyesore menus. But even so, as a one-stop shop for the latest happenings in the Premier League, you could do a lot worse than this.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Premier League News is not an official app – nor does have the feel of one – but as a hub of Premiership information it scores a secure top-half finish.
