Project Morpheus is the upcoming Oculus Rift rival from Sony. A PS4-compatible virtual-reality headset. In this article we explain what is known about the Project Morpheus release date, price and specs, based on that most blessed of things: internet rumours. (Image from Wikipedia.)
Project Morpheus is the suitably silly codename for a Sony product: a virtual reality headset. Whatever Project Morpheus morphs into will work with both theSony PS4 and the PlayStation Vita. It will utilise the PlayStation Camera to track what the user is doing, and give them a VR experience in PlayStation games. (See also: Samsung Gear VR vs Oculus Rift comparison.)
Project Morpheus: hardware
Details on the final product are sketchy thus far. What we have seen is, after all, a prototype. The Project Morpheus device we have seen features a high field of vision, and stereoscopic 3D. Project Morpheus has been demoed running at a 60Hz refresh rate, with a Full HD 1920 x 1080 display split down the centre to deliver a resolution of 960 x 1080 to each eye. It is reported that the final product will feature a 2560 x 1440 resolution, which will translate into a retina busting 1280 x 1140 display for each eye
Like all current VR headsets, the Morpheus headset currently relies on wires to connect. Sony has suggested that it could develop a wireless version, however. We understand that Sony has created a secondary box that connects to the PS4 via USB and HDMI, to handle the specifics of Project Morpheus' operation. this has HDMI out so people in the room can watch what the person in the headset is doing, in context.
