Raging Thunder is a rally car racing app for Android which blends some decent 3D graphics with an above average driving experience. Coming from Polarbit, the creators of Reckless Racing and Armageddon Squadron, we expected a little more wow factor from this app even if it is crammed full of features for your money.
If we had to put a finger on why we feel dissatisfied with Raging Thunder, despite it being an outwardly good game, we’d have to say we’re not sure what it does best. There are things it does well, like an effortless motion control steering which is so smooth it’s almost impossible to spin off the road.
The app’s 3D graphics are also a nice touch although, they’re far from the console quality status of Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit and Riptide GP. Although a fair few tracks are included in the app, most are very similar looking and flash past in a haze of blocky green and muddy brown.
Racing itself is also a confusing proposition since in Championship mode your goal is to simultaneously win races and collect enough money to upgrade your vehicle. Prize money is distributed to the race winners, as well as in the form of various dollar icons littered across the circuit.
This doesn’t really work since dollar icons are often placed in difficult to hit locations meaning you have to change your course of steering and slow yourself down to collect the much needed money.
Somewhat impressively, Raging Thunder also includes a multiplayer online mode which sounds a lot better than it actually works in practice. Once we’d managed to band together four players, the race itself was extremely laggy with our opponents lurching forwards every couple of seconds rather than being shown to drive in a fluid fashion.
Individually, none of these factors are so harmful as to taint the app as a whole but together they’ve gelled to form several uncomfortable sticking points. You can still easily put up with Raging Thunder’s flaws but there are several other racing apps we’d rather play than this.
The Bottom Line
This driving app contains lots of good ideas which fail to gel together. Additional Info
