Ratchet & Clank for PlayStation 4 is not a remake, according to developer Insomniac, but it’s not exactly a new game either. With the trailer release today, though, we have a better idea of what exactly it is.
In trying to create a “curated Ratchet & Clank experience” the team ended up with a new game that pulls from its predecessors for inspiration, according to community lead James Stevenson.
“Modern controls, several new planets, new and updated gameplay segments, all-new Clank gameplay, all new boss fights, new flight sequences and more… constructed to take advantage of the graphical prowess of the PlayStation 4″ are what we can look forward to. Even Ratchet’s arsenal has been upped, featuring tons of weapons from Ratchet & Clank Future as well as new weapons as well. One new weapon Stevenson mentions in his blog post is the Pixelizer, which turns enemies into 8-bit pixels (explosive pixels, of course).
There are all kinds of ways to approach a remaster. Compilation discs and up-rezzed visuals are the most common, almost to the point of consumer irritation in the last couple years. While I don’t want to see the original Ratchet & Clank forgotten, this approach shows a lot of love for the franchise from Insomniac and a desire to give fans something that isn’t just old code dumped into an emulator or something. The fact that it’s releasing in pretty close proximity to a Ratchet & Clank film doesn’t hurt either.
Ratchet & Clank is set to hit PlayStation 4 and movie theaters in spring 2016.
