Concrete tablet and smartphone sales numbers for the holiday season won’t be out for another few weeks, but early data is already starting to trickle in. It appears that Amazon and Microsoft both saw solid sales for their respective tablets, while Apple was the only big winner in the smartphone space.
The latest figures come from Chitika, which says it surveyed a sample of 300 million impressions from its advertising network that spans 300,000 websites. While Chitika tends to show a market with skewed share in favor of Apple, the trends it has found are nevertheless quite interesting:
Ignoring the actual raw numbers, you can see clearly that the Kindle, Surface, Galaxy, and Nexus lines all managed to eat away at iPad and other tablets in the market. The Kindle Fire continues to top the Android tablet marketplace, while the Microsoft’s flagship device has surpassed Google’s.
Meanwhile, Apple was the only company to see good holiday news in the smartphone arena, despite its slipping tablet situation. The iPhone was the only smartphone to see usage share gains following last month’s shopping frenzy.
It’s important to note that this study was drawn from between December 20 to December 29, 2013. Furthermore, it only includes Web traffic generated within the US and Canada.
This is key because not only do Chitika’s numbers traditionally show Apple with higher smartphone and tablet shares, but the company also does better in North America than in the rest of the world.
