Cruzerlite delivers with the Experience TPU case for the Galaxy S4
In the past few weeks since I picked up the Samsung Galaxy S4, I’ve been treated to an assortment of accessories for the device, including a mile-long list of cases that come in all shapes, colors, and sizes.
I haven’t tested most of them out yet, as I like to give my cases a few days of normal use before getting started on a review — just in case any annoyances pop up after time that weren’t there initially — but the Cruzerlite Experience TPU case immediately stood out from the crowd, so I bumped it up just a bit on my list of priorities (which never seems to get any smaller, by the way).
Cruzerlite’s Experience line of TPU cases for the S4 are made from shock absorbent and scratch resistant thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and feature a custom designed print with a handful of familiar Android Open Source Project (AOSP) icons.
The cases are sleek and lightweight, and feature a comfortable, grippy surface to help prevent the phone from accidentally slipping out of your hand. They wrap fully around the backside of the phone while also raising the front of the phone to protect the screen while face down. The screen is fully exposed, so you’ll either want to invest in a screen protector, or just be extra careful with your phone so you don’t end up with a scratched or shattered screen.
One thing about most of the cases I have tested for the Galaxy S4 that has driven me nuts is button covers — in almost every instance where there is a button cover, the button itself is a pain in the ass to press. Without a case, the Galaxy S4 power and volume buttons are not hard to press, so having a case that uses button covers that make it difficult to press those buttons immediately makes me want to pitch it into oncoming traffic.
The Experience case doesn’t have any button covers, and its precise cutouts provide easy access to all ports. There are no port covers, which may be a turnoff for those out there who are paranoid about dust. I, for one, couldn’t care less.
Another major annoyance I’ve ran into while testing different Galaxy S4 cases is that plugging in a 3.5mm cable into the phone can be pretty difficult, or even impossible if the case is too thick, but that isn’t the scenario with the Experience. I can easily plug headphones or the auxiliary cable in my car into the phone without having to take a case off each and every time. The same can be said about the speaker opening on the back of the phone at the bottom — it’s free and clear to let the Galaxy S4’s amazing audio quality flow through the case, and not muffled out.
If you’re the type that’s known for breaking phones on a usual basis, you might want to stray from this case. I don’t throw my phone around the house, and I’m usually pretty good about not dropping it (knock on wood), so I don’t really like trading bulk for protection. The Experience case, while feeling very lightweight, also maintains ruggedness that easily carries me through day-to-day usage without any issues.
What I like
Design — I love, love, LOVE everything about the way this case looks, and those AOSP icons are the cherry on top.
Fit — Just like a glove, unlike many of the other cases I’ve tried. Everything fits perfect, the ports are easily accessible, and the other cutouts are all perfectly aligned to make sure your phone is 100% usable as intended.
What I dislike
Nothing — It isn’t often we give a full five-star rating to any product in these parts. This is one of those times, so take a picture.
