I have recently got my hands on this genuine Samsung Galaxy S3 Extra Battery Kit. I first had the pleasure of seeing this before it hit the public eye when I was helping Samsung at the launch of the Galaxy S3. I then got to demonstrate it along with the phone throughout that evening, but this is the first time I have had a proper chance to consider its uses.
It may look like a Desk-stand in the image above but it is more, it is a mobile phone charger, desk stand and a cost-effective way of getting a replacement battery all in one very nice looking device.
As a stand
The phone can sit nicely in the dock in both portrait and landscape, with or without a case, in fact so long as your case doesn’t add too much in terms of thickness to the phone I am sure it will fit in this nicely designed desk-stand.
It doesn’t appear at first glance to offer much support to the phone when in portrait however it actually holds the phone very well, and the phone can be easily used while in the desk-stand without worrying that you will knock it over.
As a battery charger
Now this is where this dock is a little strange compared to what you might normally expect, it doesn’t charge the phone, or even connect the phone to the pc, it simply charges a spare battery that sits behind where the phone sits. The reason for this (I believe) is to enable it to be a stand where the phone can easily be rotated but does raise some interesting thoughts on the best way to use the spare and freshly charged battery.
What I have been doing is changing the battery in my phone at the end of every work day so I can go home with a full battery, but everyone will manage this in their own unique ways.
having a spare battery is useful for when you are on a long trip without easy access to a power socket or USB to recharge the battery, e.g. I recently spent 3 days in London and twice had to change my battery in the middle of the day to get extra boost of power to continue to take pictures of the waxworks in Madame Tussauds (the odd picture is attached for LOL’s)
I would not shy away from buying this product, you will soon work out how to best cope with having a fully charged battery separate from the device itself and as for a stand, its usable in both portrait and landscape, not something a lot of stands can say.
