Riptide GP is one of the best, if not the best racing game we have ever played on an Android. Hell, bar the recent Adventures Of Tintin app, we struggle to think of many better apps for Android full stop. Featuring a sumptuous set of 3D graphics, some sizzling gameplay and a hefty selection of courses to test your reflexes on, your smartphone deserves this app!
The easiest apps to review are those which sit on the opposite ends of the quality spectrum. It’s easy to recognise something that’s well (or poorly) made from the moment you open up the main menu. Riptide GP’s main menu just happens to feature some stunningly rendered water graphics so first impressions are wholly positive. This graphical sheen doesn’t slip when you delve into a furious race across any one of the app’s 12 courses with thoughtful touches like motion blur and camera splash all displayed in console quality.
As for the racing itself, like a certain Italian plumber’s karting franchise, the game’s difficulty modes are divided into different motor-size categories from 250cc to 1000cc. Each step up in class is significantly more challenging than the last, meaning you’ll feel compelled to trim down your lap times and get a Gold medal on even the toughest levels.
Even without the ability to boost your speed by performing a variety of flips and spins, Riptide GP would be pretty damn good. With the ability to ride in style, it was even easier to fall in love with this incredible app. Even better, your high scores are saved to Feint and the more records you achieve, the more extra vehicles you unlock. Super stuff!
So yes, if you hadn’t already got the gist of this review, Riptide GP is one awesome app and you’d be silly not to give it a download. I think we’ve run out of superlatives over here…
The Bottom Line
An utterly sublime racer for Android.
