Robots fall in love too, or so goes the plot of the latest featured game on Android Market. Roboto pits you against a variety of obstacles in pursuit of a hot lady robot that you saw on a rocket once. What better reason to risk ‘life’ and limb against a variety of death traps? We honestly cannot think of one…
Roboto uses the now familiar d-pad-and-action-buttons configuration to control our robot hero. The d-pad controls left and right travel, while the red action button allows Roboto to jump, holding it allows him to hover, and the green button sees him grab his piece, as it were, and unleash deadly laser rounds on whoever gets in his way.
Jumping and shooting robs Roboto of his energy which needs to be topped up. During your travels you’ll come across energy balls and energy cubes that top up your energy reserves, allowing you to progress. Low energy means limited movement and firepower, which makes the game ever trickier.
During the game, Roboto can be upgraded by visiting the in-game shop with the gold washers you’ll collect as you play. You can upgrade your gun and your suit of armour to make you more of a formidable force when facing off the bad guys. Then there’s the gold gears that multiply your score, handy when you’re going for big numbers on the online leaderboard.
Among the obstacles Roboto faces are ramps that launch him through the air, gravity switches that change the direction of the level’s gravitational pull and various moving platforms that need to be negotiated in order to reach the red door at the end of each level that transports you to the next stage.
There’s one caveat to Roboto and that’s the controls. The left and right d-pad control just isn’t responsive enough and you’ll sometimes find yourself flailing around in mid-air, knowing exactly where you want to put your little robot, but unable to actually make it happen. It makes a challenging game very, very difficult to make progress in indeed, although some would argue that just adds to the challenge.
The Bottom Line
Well-drawn platform game that has plenty of challenges to keep you playing. The controls make actually making Roboto do what you want him to slightly trickier than is strictly necessary…
