Former Sonic Team head Yuji Naka is back to work on the video game scene, and he is looking to make his big resurrection in America in the genre that made him famous: the mascot based platformer. A collaboration with NipponIchi will lead towards his newest game Rodea: The Solder Soldier being released in America for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.
Through his indie company Prope, Naka first announced Rodea back in 2010 as a Wii game, taking advantage of the console’s Wii Remote functions. However, it went into limbo for several years before finally popping up again in 2014 on different platforms.
While Naka is most famous for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, the game more closely resembles his popular cult-classic NiGHTS Into Dreams… for the SEGA Saturn with a heavier emphasis on action. NiGHTS saw a long desired sequel on the Wii in 2007, but without Naka’s touch, many fans felt that it under-delivered on years of anticipation. Perhaps Rodea will be the game to fill in that void.
The game will launch under Kadokawa Games’ label on April 2 in Japan for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. NipponIchi will be bringing it to America in Q4 2015.
