Have you ever watched that Raiders of the Lost Ark sequence in which, after jumping a pit, rolling under a door and dodging a boulder, empty handed Indy still has to outrun the hacked-off Hovitos tribe, and thought to yourself “I wish I could do that running away bit”? Weird, but here you go…
Alright, it’s not quite the same, but given the hat/jacket get-up and pursuing “savages” problem of the main protagonist of the piece, it’s clear where the inspiration for this oddly addictive timing tester came from. Fired from a catapult high into the treetops, you’re armed only with the titular rope which you need to whip (yes) onto the canopies to swing along from tree to tree, keeping you safe from the surface-dwelling savages. However, when it comes to pendulum physics, nothing is ever as easy as it seems.
As in comedy, timing is… erm, everything. The length of your tree tether determines the speed and elevation of your swing, so picking the precise moment to detach and let gravity do its stuff is the key component here – too soon and down you go, too late and you’re heading skywards… briefly. However, the polar problems are not unrecoverable, as long as you let loose another noose, or latch onto any of the passing boulders (yes) being fired up at you to use their upwards momentum to lift you higher; which, of course, is where you’ll find the zeppelins to swing from…
THE BOTTOM LINE
Offering remorseless rope action, colourful graphics and relatively smooth gameplay, Rope Escape! is essentially Temple Run in the trees, but scrolling sideways for a welcome bit of variation. The epitome of an app ‘time waster’, falling fatigue will get to you eventually, but before then there’s plenty of fun to be had, once you get into the swing of it all.
