Prepare for new employment, as The Rusty Lake Hotel has hired you to welcome new guests, and prepare meals as the guests will be dying, I mean dining, on the premises. Rusty Lake Hotel is a new puzzle adventure game for iOS that delivers animal personification, and mystery. The game delivers familiar elements for the genre, and yet easily stands on its own with a fresh approach and storyline. There’s an overarching puzzle scheme that is developed by solving little puzzles in each room of the guests. You get to explore each of six rooms one at a time, trying to solve each little brain teaser that you uncover.
Rusty Lake Hotel grabs you at first glance with a beautifully crafted art design that merges early 20th century style with artistic flourishes. The game draws you in, and you stay compelled by the individual puzzles building up the overarching storyline. The gameplay mechanics are relatively familiar as you pick up items in the environment, and then try to figure out how to use them. With that said, that doesn’t mean the game is easy, and it can be quite tough at times to figure out how everything pieces together, which fits the genre. Each visit to a new guest room constitutes a new day, and there’s a great carrot on the end of a stick dangling in front of you to keep you going.
Not only is the art beautiful in Rusty Lake Hotel, but it’s used to accurately depict the theme, and establish the animal characters in human form. There are a lot of subtle details, and even hidden optional extras to find as you go. The game also delivers a surreal atmosphere, and the mystery trends towards the crazy side of things to make it that much more engrossing. The gameplay isn’t brand new, but the design package coupled with the storyline creates an experience that goes beyond the simple classification of “game”. It’s a fascinating journey that you will remember after it’s done, which is a rarity on iOS.
Rusty Lake Hotel ($1.99, Universal) creates a mesmerizing experience that is a must have for your iOS device.
