Just recently Samsung began its global roll out of the Android 4.4 KitKat update for the Galaxy Note 3. This update which was roughly 380MB in size brought several new features to the device such as visual improvements and user interface changes just to name a few.
Those who were able to update their Galaxy Note 3 also found out that something unexpected also came with it which affected the way the device worked with third party accessories. One of the main products affected are the third party flip covers that activates the special lockscreen when closed. They no longer worked after the device got updated. Curiously though, only Samsung accessories that have an embedded identification chip works with the updated Note 3.
Apparently the Android 4.4.2 update now requires accessories with the official identification chip to be present. Samsung accessories have long had this chip but its presence was not required by previous versions of Android.
At first Samsung denied that the update was the cause of the problem and even recommended to customers that they use Samsung accessories.
The company said that “To ensure a pleasant and smooth user experience with Samsung products for our customers, we recommend that only original accessories from Samsung should be used. Of course, customers can continue to rely on third-party accessories. The full functionality of our devices and accessories, however, can only be ensured with genuine Samsung components, since only in this way is it ensured that equipment and accessories are perfectly matched. A correlation between the Android version 4.4 and the supposed incompatibility of third-party accessories does not exist.”
Today, Samsung has released a new statement which is the opposite of what it originally said. The company now agrees that it is the update that it causing this problem.
“We have currently identified a software compatibility issue with the Galaxy Note 3 update to Android 4.4 (KitKat) and select 3rd party accessories. A software update will be available shortly. We are committed to offering a diverse and reliable mobile experience for all customers, providing continued support and solutions for any issues that arise with product updates for both Samsung manufactured and third-party accessories.”
It’s definitely in the best interest of Samsung to immediately solve his issue since making third party accessories unusable on their products will only frustrate the consumer.
We should be expecting a fix to this problem arriving very soon.
