The GSMA selects Samsung's Galaxy S II as this year's top smartphone and the iPad 2 as best tablet
The GSMA has crowned Samsung's Galaxy S II the smartphone of the year. The device beat out the Galaxy Nexus, the iPhone 4S and others to win top honor.
The Galaxy S II was described by the judges as “a phenomenal success around the world that has outperformed all its Android rivals and demonstrated the maturity of the ecosystem.” That much is true, as the device really was a benchmark smartphone and made many Android devices look simply terrible.
Apple's iPad 2 was selected as the tablet of the year, an obvious choice considering the device simply defined the market and dominated sales to no end. Android slates, meanwhile, earned little praise from the GSMA.
Taking home the top mobile device manufacturer award was Samsung, while Google Maps was named Best Consumer Mobile Service. SwiftKey, the popular Android keyboard replacement app was named the Most Innovative Mobile App.
