Apparently, this is the 8th post that tackles the most common Samsung Galaxy S3 errors and problems that you, our readers, experienced. For this edition, we will still answer some questions sent to us by our readers… and there are hundreds of them, literally. There could also be 9th and 10th post that will continue to answer new concerns and perhaps some basic questions.
For the benefit of Galaxy S3 owners who are not really “tech-savvy,” we will try to simplify things so it would be easier for them to follow. Techie ones, be patient.
So, before anything else, please try to go over our first seven posts and see if your concerns have already been addressed in any of those articles. Here are the links:
Question: I am new to the Samsung Galaxy S3 as I just bought it a couple of days ago. I am also new to Android because I’ve been a long-time iPhone user. So, I tried going through the settings of my S3 and I can’t remember what I did but when I press the Home button I could no longer see the weather thingy and others. My Home screen is now bare with nothing on it. How can I bring those things back? Do I have to factory reset my phone?
Answer: It is a pretty simple problem and you don’t need to Factory Reset your Galaxy S3 to bring back lost widgets in your Home screen. Since you said there’s nothing left on your Home screen, I want you to long press on it until menu pops up. You now have the option to choose which apps and widgets you can put on the Home screen. Find weather and time widgets and long press on them to select.
I would also like to take this opportunity to tell other users that while Factory Reset can solve many software-related problems, you really don’t have to do it especially when a problem is easier to resolve. Take some time messing up with the Settings of your phone to discover new things. After all, it would take so much time to backup all your data prior to Factory Reset.
Galaxy S3 Messaging App Crashes
Problem: I updated to Jelly Bean and have had numerous problems with my Galaxy S3. Often if I’m sending a text message or I have just received one and am trying to read it, it throws me out. Then opens the message back up but before I can type anything in it will throw me back out. It happens about 3 times – by then I’m frustrated so I try to end all my running apps or reboot my phone. None of these solutions have been permanent. It doesn’t come up with the Force Close box it just opens and closes as it pleases. The other problems like battery drainage and the phone getting really hot I have fixed by turning off my automatic location update in the maps app.
Workaround: Lately, many Samsung Galaxy S3 owners have been reporting the Message app keeps on freezing and crashing. While Samsung didn’t provide sufficient information about this problem, third-party developers and tech communities assert it has something to do with Jelly Bean updates. Samsung may or may not release a fix for it but it is almost certain the next update rollout will address this issue—It has been always like that. But of course, we cannot just wait for the next update to send a text message. So, here is the most common and effective workaround:
From the Home screen, tap on Menu button and select Settings.
Scroll down a little bit to find Applications Manager.
Look for the Message app and tap on it.
Inside Message settings you can find Clear Data button; tap on that.
After clearing off data, refresh the app by tapping on Force Close button.
Go back to the Home screen and launch Message app.
It may (or may not) resolve this problem, especially if it is a bug or a glitch, but it would surely minimize its freezing, lagging and crashing. Aside from this, you can do a Factory Reset but then you have to consider the hassle of backing up every setting in your phone. Or, you can wait for the next software update.
Galaxy S3 Email Not Syncing
Problem: I have been using my stock email application to receive emails. I use my company account in general, and my Google account for phone related things. Ever since I setup the Gmail to actually Come onto my phone, I haven’t gotten a notification for any of my email. Neither one of them seem to even be checking for emails unless I go in and open the accounts individually from within the application. Thank you for your assistance.
Solution: Just basing on your statement, it seems to me that you haven’t enable auto sync in your phone. While you can still read your emails from your Gmail account manually, nothing beats an automated syncing. Here’s what you have to do…
Tap on the Menu button from the Home screen and choose Settings.
Scroll down and find Accounts & Sync.
Now, you will able to see your Gmail account, tap on it so you can set sync options.
Check all of the items you want synced with your phone.
Setting Galaxy S3 Bluetooth Volume Louder
Problem: I have a question about the default volume on a Bluetooth device. When I start a call using my Bluetooth the volume is preset to half volume. I would like to Pre-adjust the volume so that the default it is always at a much higher level. Have you found an option for this?
Workaround: No, despite the fact that millions of people are using Galaxy S3 and many are using Bluetooth every day, there seems to be no way to adjust the volume separately. Here’s one workaround that people are using to make Bluetooth volume louder:
Disconnect your Bluetooth device first.
Call any number and adjust in-call volume setting it to the highest level.
Connect your Bluetooth device.
Try calling a number again and you will notice the Bluetooth volume is much louder now.
Or, you can use an app called Bluetooth Volume, which is available from the Play Store for free. Using this app, you can adjust media, ringtone and in-call volumes.
Note: We are not, in anyway, affiliated with the developer of the Bluetooth Volume app or paid to endorse it. We just found it rather useful specifically in this problem.
Problem: Hi. Having issues with application manager in settings. When i go into application manager it freezes after a few seconds and displays message ‘unfortunately settings has stopped’. Then settings closes and I come back to start screen. I was not having this problem before. I have tried rebooting without success. I have had phone for three weeks. Any help appreciated.
Solution: I have personally experienced this kind of problem before. I was just lucky I remembered the last application I’ve installed that caused the problem, otherwise, I could reset my phone to factory settings. Here’s what I did, actually…
Remember the last app you installed in your phone prior to this problem. Smartphones are small computers, errors will never occur without triggers. There is a possibility an app triggered this problem.
Uninstall the app but since you cannot access Applications Manager as it is under Settings, uninstall it from the Google Play Store. Settings => My Apps => choose the app => tap on Uninstall button.
Now reboot your phone and try to access Settings by tapping the Menu button from the Home screen. If it works just by doing these steps, you’re lucky, too. Otherwise, there is no other option but to reset your phone to factory settings.
Galaxy S3 Keyboard Lags
Problem: The key board seems slow especially when changing from field to field in a web form (like moving from user name field to password field) or when changing from alpha to numeric. I have turned of animation in the developer pages thinking that this might help, but no glory.
Solution: It is obvious there is a slight problem with the keyboard. It is slight because it does not crash yet or causes the phone to freeze. It can be resolved by simply clearing its data.
Tap on the Menu button from the Home screen and call on Settings.
Scroll down and look for the Applications Manager.
Tap on All tab to display all installed applications in your phone.
Look for Samsung Keyboard and tap on it.
Tap on Clear Data button.
Galaxy S3 Camera Freezes When Previewing Photos
Problem: For the past 2 months, some hiccups struck the camera app whereby after snapping either 1 or 2 photos, when one tries to preview the photos taken, the screen will freeze just after a few slides either to the left, right or even pinch zooming / image reducing. It will then go into a black screen before automatically returning itself to the camera app mode.
Solution: It’s not just the camera; your gallery app is also adding up to the problem. You have two options here, first, clear data of both the camera app and the gallery. Or, second, use third-party apps.
Launch Settings by tapping on the Menu button from the Home screen.
Scroll down to find Applications Manager.
Find camera and gallery apps, one after the other, and tap Clear Data button.
When the camera snaps a photo, it will automatically save it to a directory only known to the gallery app. So, these two apps are connected and often when problem occurs, both share the same issue.
Galaxy S3 YouTube, Play Store Problems
Problem: The issues I’ve been having are that I am unable to update apps via Play Store and I am unable to play videos on YouTube. YouTube consistently gives me an error that states “Connection To Server Lost Touch To Retry”. Apps in the Play Store timeout after downloading for some time. Can you help?
Solution: It appears to me like you are having some connectivity issues when these problems occurred. If it happens again, make sure you have an internet connection, either via Wi-Fi or Mobile Data, and try connecting again. If this problem persists clear data of these apps.
Go to Settings
Choose Applications Manager
Find YouTube/Play Store apps
Tap on Clear Data button
Launch apps again and enter credentials
Galaxy S3 Runs Very Slow
Problem: There is an unusual problem in my Samsung Galaxy S3. It has become very slow although there is enough memory left. I loaded an antivirus called lookout to check for any viruses but it is still very slow. There are no other applications running still it’s very slow. It takes around 10 seconds to open the contact list or any other item from menu. Please help. Thanks.
Solution: For this problem, the best thing we can do here is guess what’s happening with your device. If your antivirus says there’s no malware in your system, that’s good enough. You said there are no other applications running in the background; I don’t know how checked it but there are ALWAYS applications running in the background in an Android environment. Here’s what we recommend you to do to address this issue:
Try turning off your antivirus or any other security suites and see if there’s an improvement.
Now, set animations to 0.5 under Developer Options.
Try disabling touch gestures especially when you’re not using them.
Disable unnecessary bloatware or apps you don’t really need.
Minimize on the widgets on every page.
Make sure Power Saver option is disabled.
Clear Data of TouchWiz.
Galaxy S3 Not Showing Thumbnails In Windows Explorer (We need help on this)
Problem: Yes, we need help resolve this problem. There could be someone out there who might have known a solution or two on how to show thumbnails of photos from Galaxy S3 on Windows Explorer. For users who are wondering what this problem is all about, we advise you to connect your Galaxy S3 to your computer, browse through the photo directory in your phone and you will see all files are showing .JPG icon.
Why is this important? Say for example you have taken hundreds of photos with your phone and you need to copy some of them. It is difficult to determine which is which when you cannot view the thumbnails. Yes, you can copy all of those photos to you computer but that would definitely take some time. And what if you’re just using someone else’s computer? Again, we need help resolving this problem because we’ve exhausted all means to no avail. Thank you.
We will be answering more questions, so stay tuned. If you have concerns, don’t hesitate to email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
