Despite being an old device this model is still quite popular and is being used as a daily driver by a number of our readers. Although it is a solid phone there are instances when some issues pop up. One such issue which we will tackle today is the Galaxy S4 can’t call issue & other call related problems. We have gathered several issues of this nature sent our way and have provided the best troubleshooting steps that needs to be done below.

Problem:My phone for the past two weeks can’t call or text, and can’t recieve calls, but occasionally recieves text.My provider is T-mobile. I got the phone from a second-hand store, and it’s most likely unlocked as I think it was initially issued by Verizon. The 4g icon comes on, but still can’t make calls. It shows a ‘circle with diagonal line inserted’ symbol whenever I try to make a call.Thanks.
Solution: The circle with the diagonal line means that the phone has no signal or no service. This could be caused by a weak reception in your area, no reception in your area, account related issues, or a phone problem.
The first thing you need to do is to make sure that you are in an area with good coverage. Since you are using T-Mobile then check if another T-Mobile device is getting a good signal in your area. Once you have verified that there is no problem with the signal in your area then next step is to verify if there are no account related issues that may be causing this problem. You should contact T-Mobile regarding this and have them check the status of your account.
Moving forward to troubleshooting the phone I would suggest that you backup your phone data then immediately do a factory reset. This way you can check if any software related problem is causing this issue. Once the reset is done make sure that your phone has a 4G signal before trying to make a call.
If the above troubleshooting steps fail then this could already be a hardware related issue. I suggest you have the phone checked at an authorized service center.
S4 Can’t Hear Calls
Problem:I first put older version for android version cause not sure which one it is know it’s 4.4.4. My issue is that I can’t hear when making a call and they can’t hear me, connects will ring on whoever I am calling though now sound. Looked on google and there is several issues regarding this issue. Hoping you can help me figure out the issue not sure if it’s a card reader problem or a chip that has come lose or a software download problem. Please help. Thanks
Solution: Have you tried checking if the sound works when you are not on a call? To do this just record a sample voice clip using your phone voice recorder app. Playback the file then check if you can hear anything. If you can’t hear anything then the issue could already be hardware related. You will need to bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked. Before bringing the phone though I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset to eliminate any software related problems that may be causing this issue.
If the issue does not occur when you playback the recorded file then this could be a software related problem. Try to start your phone in Safe Mode then check if you can hear the call in this mode. If you can then the problem is most likely caused by a third party app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
If the problem occurs even in Safe Mode try plugging a headset in and out repeatedly in your phone. This allows you to check if the phone is stuck in headset mode. You should also make sure that the Bluetooth feature of your phone is off.
One final troubleshooting step that you need to do is a factory reset. Make sure to backup your data before doing this procedure.
If the factory reset fails to resolve the issue then I suggest you bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.
S4 Can’t Hear Calls Over Bluetooth
Problem:This started about a year and a half ago when I first received my S4. I also bought a newer car around the same time, one that had Bluetooth connectivity. It seemed that I could make one call when connected to Bluetooth, then the subsequent calls would not go through. The one whom I was calling would receive my call, but neither of us could hear each other, neither through Bluetooth, nor if I disconnected it. Then, a restart would be necessary and all would work well again. Until the the next time I connected via Bluetooth. I didn’t realize this was a Bluetooth issue at first and I took it to an AT&T repair center and they determined that it was the phone and issued me a refurb. All was working well and I slowly re-introduced new apps per their directions. I had almost all apps re-added (hence my reference to Nova above) when I re-paired the phone with the car. Problem returned. I simply unpaired the phone and operated it thus until present, assuming there was some issue with the car. This Christmas, I received a smart watch (U8), which is also Bluetooth. I hadn’t tried any other Bluetooth devices since the car. However, the problem has returned with the watch connected. I can make one call, the problem returns for every call after that. It appears on my end that the call just hasn’t gone through. I get the dialing screen and the three little lights that look as if they are looking for dialing connectivity, but I never hear the ringing. However, on the other end, the recipient will answer, recognize that no one is there and hang up. The opposite works when receiving calls. I pick up and there is no one on the other end. Thank you for your assistance.
Solution: Before troubleshooting this issue make sure that your phone is running on the latest software update first.
The first thing to check in this case is if a third party app installed in your phone is causing the problem. To do this you need to start your phone in Safe Mode. In this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run while apps you downloaded are disabled. Check if the issue still occurs in this mode. If it doesn’t then an app could be causing the problem. Find out what app this is and uninstal it.
If the issue still occurs even in Safe Mode then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Once the reset is done so not install any apps or do any app updates yet. You should check first if the issue still occurs.
If the problem persists then there could be a possibility that the phone has compatibility issues with the Bluetooth devices you are connecting it to. If the firmware of the Bluetooth devices can be updated then I suggest you do the update. Once the update is complete try to check if the issue still occurs.
S4 Can’t Hear Calls Using Mobile Network
Problem:Received call on WiFi before leaving my house, when it switched over to the network I could no longer hear the caller and they can’t hear me. WiFi calls still work fine, but can’t make calls on the network. I pulled my battery for 45 minutes to see if that would reset it, but still can’t hear anyone and they can’t hear me on network calls.
Solution: This problem could be caused by a glitch in the phone software. Try starting your phone in recovery mode then wipe its cache partition. Restart your phone then try making a call.
If the problem still persists then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
S4 Can’t Call Unless Restarted
Problem:Hi, I have a problem with my Samsung S4 mini dual simple phone model number GT-19192 which I am hoping you can help with. At least a couple of times a week my phone will lose the ability to send/receive calls and texts. The problem is I don’t know it has lost this capability until I try and make a call or send a text as the phone appears normal with good signal bars etc. But if I try and make a call it won’t work and if I send a text it fails. Then I know I have a problem and so restart it. This always fixes the problem but then all the calls and texts I have missed that day come flooding in. Frustrating. Do you know how I can fix this and is it a well known issue? Obviously restarting the phone each time is not a long term solution so if I cannot fix it is ill have buy another phone. Solution: Since restarting your phone temporarily fixes the problem then there’s a big possibility this could be caused by some form of corrupt data in your device. Try starting your phone in recovery mode first then wipe its cache partition. Restart your phone then check if the issue still occurs. Most of the time the problem will now be resolved. If for instance the issue still remains then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
