In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the Galaxy S4 freezes a lot issue & other related problems. This issue is characterised by the phone freezing when certain apps are used or freezing randomly even if the phone is not used .We have gathered several issues of this nature that have been sent to us by our readers and have addressed them below.

Problem:My device is actually 4.4.2 but there was no option for that. Firstly i think this problem occured after my apps updated. The phone freezes a lot not now, when i try to watch a video on youtube it loads the video and everything but stays at 0 seconds.. Snapchat videos don’t work at all and freezes straight away, when i get a call and answer it i can’t hear anything at all as well and same goes for those who call. While i was writing this i got a message saying “unfortunately the samsung keyboard stopped working” the device has become so much slower. I checked if maybe some sort of call restrictions were stuffing up my calls but there was nothing. Any help would be much appreciated.
Solution: The first thing that you need to do before doing any troubleshooting is to update your phone software. You should be using Lollipop on your phone since the latest app updates are designed to work with Lollipop. The reason why your phone freezes a lot is probably because it is running on an outdated software.
Once you have updated your phone software I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset. After the reset check if the phone still freezes. Once the problem does not occur then you can proceed with installing your favorite apps.
Another factor that you should not overlook is a faulty microSD card. If you have a microSD card installed in your phone then try to remove it then check if the freezing issue occurs.
S4 Freezes While Charging
Problem:I been having these problems for long time! I put my phone on charge and after a while on charge the phone just freezes and there nothing what i can do about it! I remove the charger and it’s still the same and the red light is still on then i remove the battery for few seconds and put it back and try to switch on and nothing is happening!After waiting for like 1 hour it switches on!i noticed than when i switched on the phone the charging level is 55 per cent and when it’s on charge that is the amount of charge when it’s freezes to! tried to reboot my phone by three step button method pressing the volume key home key and power key and then holding home key and volume key after reboot my phone was still doing the same! is there anything you could help me with? thanks
Solution: There’s a possibility that this issue could be caused by a software problem. You should backup your phone data then do a factory reset then check if the issue still occurs.
Another factor to consider is that the charger that you are using is causing this problem. Try using a different wall charger and charging cord when charging your phone then check if the issue still occurs.
If at this point you are still experiencing the same problem then I suggest you have your phone checked at an authorized service center.
S4 Freeze On Boot Logo
Problem:My phone freezes on the Samsung display after power on. I have removed the battery and replaced it and it still freezes. What can I do to start the phone normally and retrieve my contacts and photos?
Solution: Does your phone have a microSD card installed? Try removing it as this may be causing the problem especially if this card is corrupt. Check if the issue still occurs.
If the problem still occurs then start your phone in recovery mode then wipe its cache partition. If you are unable to access the recovery mode then connect your phone to its wall charger then attempt to access the recovery mode again and wipe the cache partition of your phone.
If your phone still gets stuck in the Samsung logo then connect your device using a USB cord to a computer with Kies or Smart Switch running. Using this software you may be able to retrieve your photos and contacts.
S4 Video Freezes
Problem: My S4 has been having this problem since a week after I bought it. It Freeze’s videos but the audio keeps going. It stopped for a while but now it’s happening again and I don’t know how to fix it I’ve tried rebooting it and taking the battery out but neither of those things have helped I don’t know what to do. Please help this problem has been really aggravating.
Solution: Try clearing the cache and data of the video player app you are using as the temporary data of the app could be causing the video to freeze.
It’s also possible that the temporary data of the phone system is causing this problem. To check if this is the case you need to wipe the cache partition of your device from the recovery mode.
A third party app you installed in your phone could be causing a conflict with the video player app you are using resulting in this freezing issue. To check if this is the case you need to start your phone in Safe Mode then check if the video still freezes. If it doesn’t freeze then an app you installed could be causing the problem. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
If the video file is stored in the microSD card try to transfer this to the internal storage space of your phone then check if it plays normally.
If the above troubleshooting steps fail you need to backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
S4 Randomly Freezes & Restarts
Problem:When I open spotify music or any other app that uses sound my sound wont work unless I restart my phone and even then it may not work. Also if I open a app like youtube to watch a video it will take 2 or 3 seconds just for the video to complete “1 second”. My phone will randomly freeze and restart when I use apps. My phone also randomly loses connection to at&t so my messages wont send.
Solution: Since your phone is experiencing several issues I would suggest that you backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Once the reset is done it’s best if you check for any new software updates that may be available for our device and apply them.
S4 Freezes After Downloading Fallout Shelter
Problem:Ever since I downloaded Fallout Shelter, my phone has been acting strange. Each time unlock my phone, after a few seconds, it will freeze for approximately 5 seconds. This has happened every single time I go to unlock it now. I just uninstalled that game, but it’s still happening
Solution: Try to see if wiping the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode will help resolve the problem.
Another factor that can cause this issue is the microSD card of your phone. If you have one installed then try to take it out.
If the above troubleshooting steps fail then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
S4 Freezes When Making A Call
Problem:During a call, the mobile will act like it has no signal even though it does, and it will freeze when I try to end the call, so I have to restart the screen. It’s only when I make calls, and sometimes strange sound effects will happen too! What do I do? Oh, and the data internet never works either, no matter what I do.
Solution: Have you tried to check if the issue occurs when your phone is connected to its wall charger? If it doesn’t occur then the problem could be caused by a weak battery. Get a new battery then see if this fixes the problem.
Some form of corrupt data in your phone could also be causing this problem. Try to wipe the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode then check if the issue still occurs. If it does then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
