For a smartphone owner, what is probably the most important part of the device is the touchscreen. This is where interactions to the phone are made. Almost all of the features of the phone itself can be controlled using the touchscreen. The #Samsung Galaxy #S4 for example uses a 5 inch Super AMOLED touchscreen which when combined with its octa core processor and 2 GB of RAM works well under various conditions. There are however instances when issues can occur concerning the screen of this phone. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the Galaxy S4 screen is freezing, flickering, & other related issues.

Problem:Lately my phones have been freezing when I try to unlock my phone. I press the button and it won’t come on till I press it a few times and it unlocks itself. The the phone lags after it unlocks so I have to turn it off then and it’s fine. The other problem I’m having is its turn itself of mostly at night I’ll wake up and it’s off but the battery hasn’t changed. I factory reset the phone a few weeks so I have no idea what’s happening.
Solution: Try backing up your phone data then do another round of factory reset. Once the reset is complete do not install anything on your phone yet instead check if the phone still freezes or lags. If the issue disappears then the problem could either be caused by some form of corrupt data in the phone or it could be caused by an app that is causing a conflict with the phone software. Another factor that can cause the phone to freeze is a faulty microSD card. If your phone has one then try to take it out.
If after the factory reset your phone still freezes then this could be a hardware related problem. I suggest you have this phone checked at an authorized service center.
S4 Phone Freezes
Problem:Hi. My phone just started acting up a couple days ago. When i was on yahoo site the return button wasn’t working. It took a minute to get back to home page. Now it freezes up when i try to check anything on yahoo. This morning i turned on the flashlight app and it wouldn’t turn off. Had to shut phone off to get it to turn off. Now my screen is freezing up even when im messaging. Can you help or do i need a new phone. How convenient it is i just made my last installment payment 2 weeks ago.
Solution: What browser are you using when checking the Yahoo homepage? If you are using Chrome or any other browser then I suggest you clear the cache and data of the browser app. You should also clear the cache from the browser setting itself as most cases where the phone freezes when opening a webpage is caused by a corrupt cached data.
As for the flashlight app not turning off and your screen freezing the best way to resolve this is to backup your phone data and do a factory reset. This will wipe everything in your phone and start it with a clean slate. Once the reset is complete check if any of the issues you previously experienced still occurs.
One issue you should be particular about is the screen freezing issue. If it still occurs even after the reset then this could already be a hardware related issue. If this is the case then have your phone checked at an authorized service center.
S4 Screen Goes Blank
Problem:This issue started before downloading any third party apps. I’ll be looking at something on my phone and the screen will just go blank and everything stops. This will happen shortly after not touching the screen. I am able to just push either the home button or the power button and it comes back but it may take a few seconds for everything to start working again. I have performed a soft reset and hard reset but this issue is continuing to happen.
Solution: Try wiping the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode then start the device in Safe Mode. What this does is it deletes the temporary files stored in your phone, which if corrupt has been known to cause this type of issue, and prevents third party apps from starting while the device is in Safe Mode. Check if the issue still occurs. If it doesn’t then the issue could be caused by a third party app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
Although you have already performed a factory reset try doing it again. Make sure to backup your phone data before proceeding and take out the microSD card if you have one installed. After the reset do not install anything in your phone yet. You should first check if the issue still occurs.
If the reset fails to solve the problem then this could be a hardware related issue. I suggest you bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.
S4 Flickering Horizontal Lines
Problem: The phone screen went black for a few hours. When I turned it on nothing showed up on the screen. But that finally went away and I powered on my phone. when the phone turned on there were flickering horizontal lines on the screen. On a black background such as the settings app, the lines were green. On the home screen which is blue, the lines were white. The lines are about the size of a 0.7 mm mechanical pencil lead. And they seem to scroll downward on the screen. If I turn the brightness down then it’s almost impossible to read any words on the screen. Everything else on the phone seems to work fine. How do i get rid of these lines?
Solution: Have you by any chance dropped your phone? The flickering horizontal lines that you see on the screen is usually caused by a physical damage on the phone which is often caused by dropping the device. Try checking first if this is a software related problem by starting your phone in recovery mode. If there is no problem starting the phone in recovery mode then I suggest you do a factory reset. This will delete the data stored in the phone so proceed at the risk of losing your personal phone data ( contacts, photos, apps, music, etc.). Restart the phone then check if the issue still occurs.
If the flickering lines still appear even in recovery mode then this could already be a hardware related problem possibly due to a damaged display. I suggest you bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked. You probably need to have the display replaced.
S4 Black Screen With Bars
Problem:I have a Samsung S4 with a screen that is working but occasionally glitches out. When I turn it on it sometimes has a quick black screen with bars across it, other times it will continue showing a black screen and digital bars every time I press the on button. I can usually fix this by removing the battery and waiting a while, but it is only temporary. Also, I have done a factory restore. It seems like a small hardware problem.
Solution: If the factory reset fails to resolve the issue then this is most likely a hardware related problem. I suggest you bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked. There’s a possibility that this could be caused by a loose connection or worse you will need to have the display replaced.
S4 Screen Flickering At Low Brightness Level
Problem:Hi, my Samsung Galaxy S4 I9505 started Screen Flickering, when i set the brightness on lowest level, can you please conform me that it is an hardware problem or not.? and is it solvable problem?
Solution: Due to the nature of how a Super AMOLED display works there are instances when the brightness is set to its lowest level the screen will flicker. Some owners of this device have resolved the problem by updating the phone software while others performed a factory reset. If you will do a factory reset take note that you should backup your phone data first.
