Problem: Hello! I am having a time stamp issue with my text messages. It was totally fine a couple days ago but now I am having issues.
When my friends text me it says the messages are coming in at a 3 hour time difference (the texts I receive are 3 hours earlier). It’s causing all of my texts to be at the bottom and all of theirs to be at the top.
Also, I tried looking at my date and time settings and when I click automatic time, it sets it to the time that my text messages are received (about 3 hours earlier). Even when I try automatic time zone it’s wrong as well. I have tried clearing my cache and cookies and still nothing has helped.
Please help me with this issue as it is a major inconvenience. Thank you for your valuable time. — Mel
Troubleshooting: Hi Mel. Here’s one way to go about this:
Uncheck Automatic time zone and manually choose the correct zone.
Uncheck Automatic Time & Date.
Set the clock to correct time.
Check Automatic Time & Date.
Just in case the first procedure won’t work, I suggest you backup your data and perform full hard reset.
Full Master Reset
Turn off the device.
Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
Press Power button to select.
Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
Press the Power key to restart the device.
Galaxy S5 Contacts Won’t Load After The Update
Problem: I recently updated my s5 and I’m having some problems with it. My contacts won’t load. When I open the contacts apps it just says updating contact list and none of my messages are labeled by my contacts, only the number comes up. The weird thing is that when I type in someone’s number on the phone application it recognizes the number I typed in as someone’s number in my contacts. Also, the update filled up my memory on my phone. I don’t have very many pictures, apps, or songs on my phone. The majority of t my memory is taken up by contacts storage, 5.82 GB and system memory, 5.46GB. Is there anyway I can get rid of the stuff I don’t need? — Steven
Related Problem: Hi, Since downloading the lollipop update, I am having problems with my phone. My contact list will not load nor will my logs. I can’t add people into my contacts either. Also, my phone gets hot now. Sometimes, it lags and freezes now. I went to US Cellular for help and they were unable to help me. They even called Samsung for help, and they didn’t know what to do either. So, to send a text, I have to go to phone-and start putting in the name of whom I want to send a text-tap on their info-and then I can send them a text. This is all so annoying. I wish I had not done the lollipop update. — Rosalie
Troubleshooting: Hi Steven. First of all, just to rule out the possibility that it is just a glitch with the Contacts app or the firmware, clear the cache and data of the app. Don’t worry, your contacts are safe; there’s actually another service that stores all your contacts, it’s called Contacts Storage.
Now, based on your description, it seems like you have duplicate contacts in your phone. You see, when dialing someone’s number, the phone cannot recognize it even if the contact is properly labeled. That’s the most common sign of a duplicate contact. To get rid of those duplicates, you really don’t need to delete them but merge them with contacts that are identical. Here’s how you do it:
Launch the Contacts app.
Tap the contact in question.
Tap the merge icon.
Tap Link another contact.
Choose the duplicate contact.
Tap Done and do the process again for contacts that have duplicates.
Galaxy S5 Can’t Be Detected By PC & App Issue
Problem: Hi, nice blog you have on The Droid Guy. I have a Galaxy S5 from SFR (French carrier). Ever since I upgraded to lollipop, I have 2 issues :
– I cannot connect to a PC using USB cable anymore; I simply do not see that option (Connect via USB) or any such wording. Though power does come in the phone from a PC, and I connected to that PC a few months back.
– when I unlock the screen and start an application, or browse to a service, after 2 seconds another app, always the same , tries to open up instead, blocking the app I intended to use.. It is an app I installed, not a pre-installed app or an android service. It blocks even the alarm when it is supposed to wake me up !
I could not find anything related to USB on your page on that topic. What am I missing ? Thanks! — AA
Troubleshooting: About the USB problem, it’s more likely a driver issue with the computer. Try updating or reinstalling the driver, or better yet, install the latest version of Samsung Kies and the problem will be fixed.
The second problem seems a bit complicated because we don’t have any idea what kind of app is causing the problem and what kind of app pops up when the former is launched. That said, the most logical thing to do is to uninstall the app that keeps popping up. After doing so and it will still pop up, then try to see if it’s not a feature of the app you intended to use. Lastly, if the problem isn’t fixed, uninstall the app that triggers the latter to pop up.
Galaxy S5 Can’t Make/Receive Calls or Send/Receive SMS
Problem: I updated my S5 and now I can’t receive phone calls can’t make phone calls and the same with texts. Please help. My service provider says I have to travel all the way to Dallas to get my phone fixed and that is an hr and a half away from me. — Rhea
Suggestion: Hi Rhea! If the phone doesn’t have any other problems aside from not being able to make/receive calls and send/receive text messages, then the problem might still be in the provisioning of the phone. It’s a network thing, some kind of a “registration” for your phone in your provider’s system so it can receive service. During my tenure as a wireless tech support, I did receive a lot of calls from owners having the same problem as yours. What needs to be done is to re-provision the phone so it can receive signal or service and it can be done over the phone. However, I don’t want to discredit your provider, so if they said their tech needed to check the phone physically to fix the problem, then you have no choice but to follow what they told you.
Galaxy S5 Won’t Respond When Locked, Screen Flashes When Charging
Problem: I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 for almost 7 months now and I’m starting to have problems with it. First my phone will lock up on the locked screen, it will go black and none of the buttons will work until I take it out of the case and take the battery out. Second, when I plug my phone up to the 120 volts in my house the screen starts to flash. How can I fix these problems on my phone without buying a new phone? I left an I phone 4s because I was having trouble out of it, so please help me fix my phone before I get mad and change to a different phone. Thank you! — David
Troubleshooting: If the phone refuses to respond even if the Power button is pressed to wake it up, then it’s suffering from a performance-related issue, unless one of the downloaded apps is causing it. To rule this possibility, try booting the phone in safe mode and lock it, and then try to wake it up to see if the phone still freezes. If the problem doesn’t occur in safe mode, then find the app that’s causing it and uninstall it. Otherwise, the problem is with the firmware and provided that the phone didn’t suffer from physical or liquid damage, there is a possibility the flashing of the screen when charging is related to the first issue. That said, it is necessary to hard reset your phone but don’t forget to backup all your data first.
Galaxy S5 Keeps Popping Up Water Damage Alert
Problem: Hello, I came across your drove of knowledge on S5 and thought I might ask – I have a really annoying problem with my phone as I have bought the original Samsung flip case and I somehow believe connected it appropriately but the phone keeps telling me every five seconds that the battery case has not been properly connected and thus it is not waterproof. This is rather annoying as it does not let you type properly or listen to youtube (the notice pauses the stream). Is this a common problem and is there any way to switch off the notice? Best regards, Gert.
Troubleshooting: Hi Gert! Just make sure the back plate is snapped on and the charging port is properly sealed by the cover. After that and the phone is still popping up the warning message, there’s nothing you can do about it but to dismiss it every time it pops up…unless, you want to root your phone, which may void your warranty, and get rid of the warning message by installing Xposed framework then enabling Xposed G-Touchwiz. Please proceed at your own risk. And NO, there’s no way you can get rid of the alert without rooting your phone.
Galaxy S5 Screen Flickering Issue
Problem: My S5 started having screen flickering/glitches about a month or more ago. I put it off, cos it wasn’t that much of an issue. It just did it when I went to shut the screen off, when the screen was awoke by a notification, and when I turned the screen on. No biggy. But now it’s started to not turn on. The LED light will blink & you can sometimes see it light a bit to flicker only in the top of the screen. Can you please help me troubleshoot what’s wrong and possibly how to fix it? I got this phone in June or July of last year. Could it just be time to get a new phone? Thanks in advance. — Quinley
Troubleshooting: When to comes to the screen flickering, it is more often a hardware issue than anything else. However, there have also been reports of screen issues caused by apps, so it would be wise to just boot the phone in safe mode for now and observe if the problem still occurs. Of course, if the problem disappeared in safe mode, it’s just an app issue and all you need to do is find the app that’s causing it and uninstall it.
However, if the problem remained even in safe mode, then we are almost certain it’s a hardware issue (specifically a display problem). That said, you need help from a technician but before that, make sure you’ve backed up your data because the first thing the technician would do is to reset the phone to factory defaults and thus, deleting all your personal data. It is also wise to perform factory reset prior to sending your phone in for repair.
Galaxy S5 Can’t Make/Receive Calls After the Update
Problem: Hi, I just upgraded my Samsung S5 last week because it kept prompting me the upgrading message. After upgraded, I notice I am not able to make any outgoing calls or receive incoming calls.
Whenever I answering the call, it will ended itself. Same as whenever I make outgoing call, only heard one ringing tone and it will turned to call ended itself. Please advise. Thanks. — Ivy
Suggestion: It sounds like the phone needs to be provisioned again by your service provider. As long as it’s getting good signal or coverage, problems like this are often network related. So, call your service provider and report the problem. They may be able to help you fix it.
Galaxy S5 Heating Up Plus Performance Issue
Problem: Hello, my Samsung S5 has been acting up and honestly I’m not sure whether this started with the lolipop update or earlier.
The phone warms up if I’m browsing the Internet , whether it’s Facebook or any other page really. If I’m on it for more than 10 minutes , it starts warming up. Or even if I’m on a phone call for about 15 minutes , the phone gets so hot that I turn it off for fear of battery explosion or something similar.
That’s not the only problem , but the phone itself isn’t working properly. It’s slow at times. never had this issue before.
And the battery?! What did they do to it ?! It used to last much longer. Is the lollipop update that “heavy?”
I would really appreciate your feedback. I’d like to know if at this point I should simply contact Samsung and ask for a replacement. Regards, Keta.
Troubleshooting: Hi Keta! Compared to Kitkat, yes, lollipop is heavier with new features and all but that’s not the reason why the phone is heating up so bad. Inconsistencies between apps and the new firmware are often the cause why the phone heats up. There are also times when the firmware itself is the cause of overheating. To isolate the problem, boot your phone in safe mode and observe if the phone still heats up. If so, then it’s the firmware that has issues, otherwise, it’s the apps you downloaded.
For firmware-related issues, it’s always wise to first wipe the cache partition and observe if the problem still occurs and if so, then proceed with factory reset but don’t forget to backup all your data especially ones stored in the device’s internal storage.
For app-related problems, however, all you need to do is determine which app(s) is causing the problem. Clear the cache and data of the suspected app or download the latest update if necessary. If the problem remained after that, uninstall and reinstall the app.
Galaxy S5 Slightly Bent, Camera Problem, Unresponsive Screen
Problems: Dear team, I have three different concerns about my Galaxy S5.
First of, I’ve seen all the bendgate videos about iPhones, and a couple of months ago I noticed that my galaxy is a little bent in the top right corner (where that front cam and sensors are. The bent area is roughly from the power button to the proximity sensors). Its hardly noticeable but when you place it screen down and press that part the down section of the phone lifts a bit. Have to point out that its not much, maybe a millimeter or 2 but bugs me a lot as i am one of those users that has a screen protector and a heavy duty case on the phone b4 it leaves the store. I’ve compared it with 3 other galaxy s5 phones and one was perfect(no noticeable bent what so ever when placed screen down on a flat surface), but the other two were just as bent as mine was which leads me to believe that its not my doing? Or all 3 of us bent it that way in a pocket?
Have you had any inquiries regarding that?
Second problem is with the camera. Very rarely when I turn the camera on the screen goes black and cant do anything with it. I have to restart the phone and its back to normal then.
Third issue is an unresponsive screen after a call. It used to be once in 10 calls but its more frequent now. When i finish the call and try to press the off button, the screen stays very dim and unresponsive. It would stay like that for 10 secs or so and if try to turn the screen on and off via power button I cant unlock it or press anything else on it.
I run lollipop 5.0 for a few months now and after updating from kit kat i did a master reset. Twice. Thanks for any help. — Nik
Troubleshooting: Hey Nik! As to the Galaxy S5 being slightly bent, there’s nothing we can do about that if indeed such is the case. You have to discuss with your provider, retailer or Samsung to have that issue verified. And no, we haven’t had any inquiries on the bent S5.
I am not sure how “rarely” the camera problem occur but it seems like it’s just a problem with the application itself or there could be a third-party app causing it. When using the camera, try to be mindful of apps you use prior to using it so if the problem occurs, you already have a suspect. Then, boot your phone in safe mode, run the same app and use the camera to see if the problem still occurs.
About the screen issue after a call, I’ve see this problem on my phone before and while the unresponsive screen issue is considered a performance-related problem, in my case, it was just the phone app glitching from time to time. What I did was clear the cache and data of the Dialer app and it was gone. So, try that and it that won’t work, let your service provider take care of these problems for you.
The last two problems are firmware-related. Reinstalling the firmware will fix them.
Galaxy S5 Can’t Send/Receive MMS
Problem: Hello, I have an AT&T Galaxy S5 and transferred over to Straight talk network for over a week now. The device works great for a few days, but after a couple of days I noticed that my device cannot send and receive an MMS. I have not been called Straight talk about the issue because I want to know first if there will be another way how to fix my problem. Help! — Aiden
Troubleshooting: Hi Aiden, this certain issue is common especially to those BYOP (Bring Your Own Phone) customers of Straight Talk. This issue occurs when the APN and MMS settings were not configured correctly.
The best thing you can do first is to make sure that your mobile data is turned on. Since you’ve mentioned that your device is coming from AT&T probably, the issue is caused by the APN settings that was not configured correctly. To review if you have the correct APN and MMS settings you can directly go to Straight Talk website or you can call customer service and ask the correct APN settings intended for your device.
