Its 2800 mAh battery is able to provide around 21 hours of 3G talk time, 9 hours of web browsing, and 11 hours of video playback. Once the battery has run out of charge the first thing any owner would do is to charge the phone. Some of our readers however are experiencing an issue with charging the device which is what we will tackle in today’s post.
In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will aim to resolve the Galaxy S5 not charging issue & other power related problems of the device. We have selected some of the issues of this nature sent our way and have provided the best troubleshooting steps that needs to be done below.

S5 Use The Original Cord & Charger To Receive Faster Charging Error
Problem:Sudden appearance of Pop.up stated “use the original cord & Charger to receive faster charging” began when on & plugged in. I turned off, that night it only charged 56%!!! I’m freaked about it. 1st Pop.up appears whether on or off. If cord isn’t just right (like in a straight line, etc) will not charge. 2nd. Declining charge received per charge. 3rd charge Held for declining amt. of time (26% gone in under an hour). 4th Afraid I’m frying equipment (battery, charger, cord, ?software?). 5th I am a recent widow (husband was paralyzed & had CKD, both medical accidents) & I’ve just received dx of kidney failure too, only 56! Thus. Med Testing now & can’t work…phone under warranty, pd insurance yet Verizon recommends I sent cell to Samsung. 2.5 wk turnaround. Didn’t drop, get wet etc. 1 yr on 12/22/15. PLEASE HELP (LOST 10% Power while typing! Thank you very much.
Solution: One of the main factors that causes this problem is the incorrect voltage/current supplied by the charger to your device. This usually happens if you are not using the original charger that came with your phone.
However, there are also cases when even if you are using the original phone charge this error message still occurs. In cases such as this the first thing that you should check is the USB charging cord that you are using. This cord breaks easily especially if it is constantly bent or coiled. The fact that the phone charges only when the cord is positioned in a straight line increases the chances that the USB cord you are using is already defective. Try changing this cord and see if this resolves the issue.
If the problem persists the next thing you should do is to check your phone charger port for any signs of dirt or debris. If necessary clean this using a can of compressed air or a cotton bud dipped in alcohol.
If you have another wall charger available then you can use this as well to check if your phone charges with it.
One other factor that can cause this problem is a glitch in your phone software. If the above troubleshooting steps fail to resolve the issue then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
S5 Does Not Charge Or Turn On
Problem:I was using my phone last night (11/27/2015) and when I awoke this morning it would not turn on or charge. It worked perfectly before hand and I have tried all your steps to fix it and it does not seem to be working.
Solution: If you already performed all of the necessary steps that we have recommended to fix this issue then this may already be a hardware related problem. Try changing your phone battery and see if this works. If it doesn’t then you need to bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it fixed.
S5 Not Charging
Problem:Phone won’t charge. Showed the sharing power app message. And I don’t know what to do.
Solution: The power sharing app is a new app introduced by Samsung that allows your phone to share its power with another device while using the Samsung power sharing cable. Do you have his app installed in your phone? If you do then try to uninstall it and check if your phone will now charge.
If the problem still persists then try using a different USB cord when charging your phone.
One final troubleshooting step that you can do is to do a factory reset using the phone hardware keys. Make sure to backup your phone data before proceeding. Once the reset is complete try to check if you can now charge your device normally.
S5 Does Not Charge
Problem:My phone will not charge.It has a caution sign.Every time I plug in a charger it show the caution sign. I tried taking out the battery and charging over night .And when it did work that battery would be at 29 then I’ll pull out the battery and It would be at 19% .Thank you.
Solution: It looks like your phone may already have a bad battery. You should however check first if the phone software has anything to do with this issue by backing up your phone data then doing a factory reset. This reverts your phone software back to its original condition. Try charging your phone after the reset then check if the issue still occurs.
If the problem persists then you should try to change the battery of your phone.
S5 Does Not Turn On
Problem:my alarm went off this morning then after turning it off, i let my phone sit before trying to use it. I saw that the notification light was flashing so i tried to turn it on to see what the notification was and my phone would not turn on. i tried to take out my battery but that did not work. my phone is still unresponsive
Solution: Try taking out your battery again as well as the microSD card if you have one installed. Press and hold the power button for at least a minute. This discharges your phone circuit and clears out its RAM. Reinsert just the battery then try to turn on your phone. If you still get no response try charging your phone using its wall charger for at least 20 minutes then attempt to turn on your phone again.
If the problem persists then you should try using another battery on your phone and see if it works.
S5 Does Not Turn On After Uninstalling App
Problem:Woke up in the morning and phone was working fine. I have a 360 Security app installed and “boost charge” was running. I decided it was annoying so i decided to disable it. Next second the touch screen was not working. I have encountered this before so i tried to restart the phone. Couldn’t do that because the touch screen would not work. So i removed the battery. Put the battery back in and nothing. No light. Phone feels as if it has bricked. I have tried all the troubleshooting ideas. None are working.
Solution: Try starting your phone in recovery mode then wipe the cache partition of your device. You should be able to use the touchscreen in recovery mode. If you are unable to use the touchscreen then it’s very likely that the digitizer of your phone may already be defective. You need to have this replaced at an authorized service center.
If however the touchscreen works in recovery mode but then wiping the cache partition does not resolve the problem then you need to consider doing a factory reset. Take note that this procedure will delete the data stored in your device. Make sure to do this if you have recently made a backup of your phone data.
